my daughter as just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes but we have been up and down to the doctors for the last year wiv some of the symptoms of type 2 ,can type 2 lead to type 1 ?and is type 2 or borderline really that hard to diagnose ?even if you had the symptoms on and off for a year please x?so really what i am asking is if my daughter was diagnosed early enuf with type 2 or border line could it of prevented her getting type 1 please? x

Type 1 and Type 2 are different beasts. With Type 1 Diabetes the body stops producing any insulin. With Type 2 Diabetes the body produces insulin of a poor quality, or of a poor quantity, or the body is resistant to the insulin that is made.
It is my understanding that Type 1 happens swiftly, and there's absolutely nothing anyone can do about slowing it's progress. There is no prevention.
Type 2 can hum along slowly for many years (about a decade in my case I think) before diagnosis. It can sometimes be improved or put into remission by weight loss or diet control. Type 2 isn't a borderline form of Type 1.

Diagnosis of Type 2 can be tricky if insulin impairment is only slight. But, I don't believe that diagnosis of Type 1 is as tricky.

The symptoms of both types of diabetes are very similar, and as many members here will tell you, sometimes diagnosis of type is harder than the diagnosis of diabetes.

T1 is an auto-immune condition. T2 is very different in that the body may still produce insulin but unable to use it. A GAD antibody test will confirm if auto-immune or T2.

Type 1 for me happened very quickly after a chest infection (I never really picked up after that) and like others have said type 2 is slower to present it's self. For me there was absolutely no doubt of type 1 diabetes with high blood glucose along with sugar and ketones in my water sample. There are tests that can be done to determine the type of diabetes but not all PCTs provide these due to expense.
