Type 1 and a half?

Hello, I'm a 21 year old Illustration student diagnosed 2 weeks ago and still haven't had a proper meeting with the diabetes specialist at the hospital yet (it's arranged for friday). I have been lurking here for a few days but felt I should probably introduce myself :D

When I was diagnosed my blood sugars were 28, which I suspect was partially due to me eating lots of sugary food to try and put back the weight I lost (I went from 7 stone 9 to 6 stone 9 in a few weeks, a stone I really couldn't afford to lose since I was very underweight to start with!!). The nurse at the hospital put me on 12 units of novomix 30 in the morning and 6 in the evening, then after going to bed on high bg levels, she put it up to 8 in the evenings, which worked fine for about a week, and then suddenly my bg levels just decided to go really low and I started having like 2 or 3 hypos a day so I've gone right down to 6 in the morning and 4 in the evening which seems to be controlling it a little better, still had a bit of a minor hypo this morning but quite high bg levels all day! I suppose my levels will be a bit all over the place since I'm so newly diagnosed but it seems like suddenly I don't need anywhere near as much insulin any more! The only thing I can think of is that I had my flu jab the day they started being really low and I've been feeling a bit rubbish since; horrible taste in my mouth, bad temper, bit sniffly etc. The nurse at the surgery said I might be a type 1 and a half (although at the hospital they said type 1), does anybody know what that is exactly??

Also it may be completely unrelated but seems to much of a coincidence to be - I've always had hypos (I assume they're still called hypos if not diabetes related?) since I can remember, up until I lost all the weight and started needing the toilet all the time/ being thirsty and things (I assume when the diabetes started). It's almost as if my pancreas was working overtime producing too much insulin and has now given up! That's probably a silly concusion to draw but I was wondering if there's any kind of connection there and if anyone else had the same kind of thing?

Sorry for so many questions in my first post!! :?

Thankyou both for replying :D I have since spoken to the diabetes specialist at the hospital and she thinks the other nurse may have said it just because she'd recently taught her about it :? She was quite reassuring in my meeting with her last week and I feel a bit more clued up about everything now! It's good to know there are helpful people behind me and also that if I have any extra questions I can ask the seemingly very helpful people here too!

hya nicola and welcome,
glad you feel a bit more knowledgable and as u say ,you can always ask anything u dont know :D
