Type 1 and Anorexia/Bulimia/EDNOS/Overexercising. NOT diabulimia.

So, as you may have guessed from the title I am wanting to ask if anyone knows about help/information/support that is available for type 1 diabetics who have eating disorders that are NOT diabulimia??

Everywhere I have looked or asked I am just bombarded with info and advice about missing my insulin which is useless to me as this has never been an issue, I’ve always taken my injections!

It’s getting to the point where I’m running out of places to look as it seems that if you are diabetic people assume the only eating disorder possible is diabulimia whereas I suffer on and off with Anorexia, Bulimia, EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified) and overexercising and have done for just under 15 years now. If anyone knows where I can find some information or advice about these things combined with type 1 please share??
Thanks! Xx

As a former ED sufferer (although not T1), I empathise with your frustration.

Bearing in mind you say you sensibly always take your insulin, is your T1 a fundamental part of your problems with eating, or is it just*** an bit additional part of your life that you have to take into account in all you do, and how you generally live your life?

The word "just" above isn't to trivialise your T1 or ED, but trying to work out how fundamental it is to your ED, as opposed to another complicating factor.

Have you had general help for your eating disorders over the years, or are you recognising various stages and coming to a point where you feel it's your time to take a different path?

@asortafairytale or @jacqfromdwed may be able to help. Or Google deed (diabetes with eating disorders).

I hope you find support soon. Feel free to post here as well.

Thanks for your reply, when you said google deed I assume you meant dwed, I have done this and it’s never given me anything useful, like I said in my post most sites are geared towards diabulimia even the ones that state they are for all ED’s ☹️☹️ X

Hi there, thanks for your reply. Great to hear that you’re a former rather than present sufferer
My T1 came at an awkward age in life and I feel that it may be a massive contribution to the later development of my ED’s. It also is a large part of the illness as I manipulate my doses to suit what I want to or don’t want to eat and has altered my beliefs about certain foods and what they will do to my BS etc. Sorry if this isn’t what you were asking it’s late and I don’t always understand things first try (my brain doesn’t function as well as it should due to malnutrition and dehydration I assume).

Over the years I have had lots of varying degrees of help with the ED’s either as an inpatient or outpatient and in different places e.g. diabetes wards/specialist ED wards/ED clinics/dwed clinics and other groups and support networks to name a few.

I’m just at a stage where I am desperate to find anything that I haven’t already tried over and over with no results. My main aim is to recover and to be able to live a happy life whilst looking after myself and my diabetes together.

Xxx
