Hi I have a query, i could do with some help, diagnosed with type 1 in 1994. have never had a stable level of Hba1c always been around 12. On a recent visitto the GP I saw a diabetic nurse who talked about byetta, i came home and looked at it in the forums on hear and found it really useful, I have now been told by another nurse, that this is only given to people who have type 2 or are on tablets. Is this the case?? I also have a weight problem which is a bigger concern to me having put on 2 stone in 1 year. I'm not due to see the consultant untill May, he is very open to suggestion but i have to get past the nurse first si any information i can gain would be a benefit. thanks guys x

Byetta is not normally prescribed to T1's. It is not recommended by the manufacturers for such use. However, there are some T1's who have been put on it by individual Consultant's and have had good results. This is something you need to discuss with the Consultant and see if he is 'up to speed' on this aspect of Byetta use. It would be 'off licence' use.

As regards weight loss a reduction of carbohydrate intake, which results in using less Insulin, which is probably where the excess weight is coming from, and also more exercise if you are able can have quite a marked effect in this area.

We have an extensive thread entitled Byetta in this section. Have a read around that topic, there may be more information available there.

Byetta mimics the hormones which switch off hunger
That's why they are sometimes given to T1s who have weight problems.

Thanks for the reply and information, I was always told to have carbs at every meal. I am a carb munster and was on reductil for the weight, this has since been discontinued and the manufacturers don't make it any more plus i have stopped smoking. I have also been told insulin makes you feel hungry and is a hormone which puts weight on, i then eat more so increase the insulin it just seems a vicious circle which i have problems handling if the weight goes the mood is lifted. Can you recommend a diet which i could follow, i have been told slimming world or weightwatchers are the best ones to do - tried them both and still put weight on x
