Type 1 and exercise issues

Hello,

I am type 1 diabetic and am 28 years old. I have had diabetes for 22 years.

I have just started going to the gym regularly and wondered if anyone had any tips on what to eat or how to run your sugars so that you don't hypo straight after. Twice this week I have tested before gym session and been at a blood sugar of 13 (following advice of diabetic clinic that I should run higher) and after gym session I plummeted to 2.4. To me this seems like a lot! Anyway tonight I went and tried running very high before I went. I was 18.4 and again after an hour at the gym was 6.4!!

Does anyone else find this?

I'm going to the gym as I want to tone up and lose about half a stone as I'm not overweight. I don't want to have to eat lots to compensate goin to the gym as this surely defeats the object of trying to lose weight.

Anyone's help would be appreciated

Thanks

Kate

Hi Kate!
Before and after working out it is all about complex carbs and slightly reducing your insulin with meal you eat before you workout. Putting your sugars right up with simple sugars (lucozade/jelly babies etc) wont hold without complex carbs (wholegrains). But every diabetic is different so it really is trial and error depending on 'your' diabetes!! I am a Personal Trainer and do my own High Intensity Interval Training workouts daily and lift heavy weights 3-4 time a week, as well as train clients everyday, ive been type 1 for 20 years, so it can be done!! A perfect pre-workout snack idea is some porridge sweetened with a tbsp of honey and a hand full of berries, or whole grain toast with peanut butter and a sliced (very ripe) banana!! Post- workout is fruit with cottage cheese, of something similar to pre-workout!! These are perfect pre & post workout snacks for anyone working out not just diabetics!! Just stick with it, you'll find something that works for you!! Good luck :) (if you would like to chat my facebook page is facebook.com/charlottedobiept )
