Type 1 and Hashimotos thyroid disease

Hi, I’m Jacqui

I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s) and put on levothyroxine.

Everywhere I look online about Hashimotos and diabetes tells me that thyroid disfunction can cause blood sugar to be more difficult to control but both my gp and practice nurse seem completely unperturbed about this. Me, less so!

I’ve been type one for 30 years come next April and I’ve been advised that I am now within the timeframe where complications may begin so I’m not as nonchalant as my health care providers seem to be.

Anyone else on here with type 1/Hashimotos? How does it affect you day to day and has your control become more difficult?

Thanking you in advance

Jacqui

Just a T2 here, but had Hashi's long before the diabetes diagnosis. It'll take a while for the dosage of the thyroxine to be just right, so you might see slightly different numbers than you're used to as you go. But as long as it wasn't treated, your blood sugars were more affected than they will be once you are on the right dosage to compensate for what you naturally lack now, most likely. Once you're on the right dose, things should normalise and hopefully become easier than they have been before now. Give yourself time, and don't panic.

I don't usually b*tt in when it's a T1 thing, but there'll be more here who'll know what's what... An auto-immune condition rarely comes alone, there's quite a few T1's with Hashi's. (Just like I have both Hashimoto's and rheumatism. Lucky us, eh?). Hang in there.

Hello @jacquimac

Yes am also on levothyroxine - got t1d first then a few years later along comes the underactive thyroid diagnosis, put weight on, lost alot of hair, got dry skin and brain turned to fuzz, took a while to get my dosage right and yes it did impact on my insulin requirements, but once i'd got the dose right my BG levels stabilised, have had it around 8 years now, I get a blood test done twice a year for HbA1aC and thyroid levels are checked then along with cholesterol, kidney function etc etc, been a few minor tweaks over the years but seems to be ok now.

Yes some came back and it's thickened out but still lost volume due to peri menopausal as well so hasn't quite gone back to normal, still it's no great bother though, it really is a minor blip with control, that will be fine once under control with medication.
