Hi guys,

I don't know what to do - I'm type one and I've just found out I'm pregnant (not planned). I've just moved 100 miles away from home and 3 weeks later I'm still waiting for the GP to register me so that I can be referred to a new Diabetes Clinic.

I emailed my last DSN to ask and she said I need to be seen ASAP by a GP but my new practice are refusing to see me until I am registered (even though the delay is their end and my partner who I live with is also registered!)

Any ideas of what I can do next? I'm really panicking about the baby and doing any damage with my sugars. I have only been diagnosed for a year and my BG is already doing weird and wonderful things...

Thanks xx

Hi there,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! You need to get an emergency prescription for folic acid 5mgs. This cannot be bought over the counter. You can also self refer to your nearest maternity unit - not a birth centre or midwifery led unit. Let them know asap that you have T1DM and that you are having issues regarding registration with a GP. You should be seen as an urgent case. Your blood glucose will be up and down in early pregnancy due to hormone changes. Just do your best to keep them stable. Expect lots of hypos and you may lose your warning signs - make sure your partner (& maybe some trusted work colleague?) know this. It's a bit of a roller coaster but you'll find that you'll soon get used to it! You'll also need loads of blood glucose sensors/libre/cgm.

Hope you get sorted soon x

Congratulations!
Can't promise all will be fine but have also done 3 pregnancies with some dodgy sugars and I loved it in spite of the angst about blood sugars and a rather medicalised experience. All 3 were born healthy though needed neo natal help as slightly premature.
Now is the time to focus on your blood sugars as first 12 weeks is when all the development goes on. Speak to the gp as you do need that folic acid prescription and she or he can refer you onto the appropriate specialist
maternity team.
If you don't already have a Freesytle Libre now might me a time to get one if the NHS will prescribe that for pregnant women in your area. This will help you notice trends in your bgs across 24 hours.

Thank you both for the advice. I am luckily already taking Folic Acid as we were planning to think about starting a family in the not too distant future. Just hoped that I would be all settled in and registered with a team first!!

I didnt realise I can self-refer to a maternity unit so I will try that.

Thanks again xx
