Hey everyone:)
I've recently been put on a prescription of Prednisone for respiratory problems caused by a viral infection, but the prednisone seems to be making my blood sugars spike pretty badly. I have read that this is normal for prednisone, but is there any way to avoid this? Or should this medication not be taken by a type 1? I have been using correction doses, but I seem to have to take a lot more insulin than usual for correction doses to make any difference to my blood sugar levels :banghead:. I am beginning to think that the doctor made a mistake in prescribing prednisone given the effects on my blood sugar levels.
Thanks in advance.

Hey there - it's a steroid so yes these do affect our bg levels, but rather than not take it just adjust your corrections doses to counter the raised bg levels, it's only temporary whilst you take it but you shouldn't stop taking it because it raises your levels, unless your GP specifically tells you to do so, lots of type 1's have to take various medications which can raise our levels, we just have to adjust our insulin to counter them where necessary, if you need help with your corrections then contact your diabetes team for their advice though.
