I've been on here a while now but I'll give you my background. I've been a type 1 diabetic since 1996 and I'm 28 now. My last hba1c was 9.9 so my doctor put me on slow release metformin. I started one a day (500 mg) from the 6th July 2011 and I've had some tummy problems. I'm due to start taking 2 tablets a day from the 20th July 2011 but I'm not sure if I will be able to tolerate it. So far I've noticed the tummy upset, slight diarrhea, wind and no appetite.

Will the symptoms pass or is this something I will have to learn to live with? :?:

Thanks for reading!

Hi Cole :) Your stomach problems from Metformin may go in a month or two if you can bear them that long. It is however very important to take Metformin during your meal, not before or after as it can damage the stomach lining unless you take it with food. The SR version is supposed to be better than the ordinary Metformin for this problem.

yingal,

I tried metformin about two years ago to try and improve my insulin sensitivity, I had a pretty horrid time every-time I upped the does, and I actually found that it made very little difference to my insulin requirement (maybe 10 - 15% reduction of my basal)..

I found that by far the better way of increasing my sensitivity was to exercise and now I do around 1/2 - 1 hour of brisk walking a day to and from the office and this alone has reduced my insulin requirement by around 40%.
