Type 1 and tummy upsets

My lovely little boy was diagnosed back in January with type 1 he is 7 years old. He has been coping brilliantly, but keeps getting tummy upsets - he's had three since diagnosed. Is this common with diabetics and is it related to taking insulin? or is it just bad luck and he's picked up three bugs from school?

I am type 2 so not sure if this is relevant or not but I also get upset tummy's a lot and i take insulin and also Metformin. now Metformin has a known side effect of bad tummys, not sure about insulin though?

Diabetics are more prone to diarrhea though in general whether on medication or not, its called diabetic diarrhea, ask the doctor about it when you see him next.

Hi ArthurGeorge

I would keep an eye on him for smelly stools, and weight loss as I do not want to alarm you but coeliac disease is another auto immune condition which sometimes comes hand in hand with diabetes.

My son was diagnosed a T1 at 3 years old and coeliac disease (gluten free diet) came along when he was 8. He is now 16 and copes very very well with his diet. So don't be alarmed but have him checked out sooner rather than later. Have a word with your DSN to have a blood test done. My son had a biopsy done to find out for definite but on a recent coeliac clinic the consultant said that it is just a simple blood test that is all that is needed now.
Hope the little lad is OK.
