Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hii im 29yrs old with type 1 diabetes from last 15yrs.i got autoimmune thyroiditis (hypothyroidism) too. So on medication for this. My hba1c reading was 7.8 and my tsh was 4.8.(hope these are in their normal limits)
So a big question to me is can i get pregnant with these and have a happy family with a baby.
Im married since 1yr 9months and on contraceptives for the first 1 yr. Then stopped contraceptives. We were seriously trying for kids from last 3months but of no use..
So can u plz tell me what are chances of getting pregnant being a type 1 and is there any conditions where there are less chanced of conception with diabetes. Kindly help

7.8 I think is running a little high for pregnancy, it would be safer for yourself and the child if you try to get it below 7 before conception.

According to Diabetes UK:
During the first trimester of pregnancy, the HbA1c target for women with diabetes is the same as for planning a pregnancy, that is 43 mmol/mol (6.1%) or lower. During the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, from week 13 onwards, HbA1c should not be used for assessing blood glucose control.

I'm 22 but would like a child within the next 3 years, however at the moment my A1c is way above target so I'm not even going to try until I know that it will be safe. I have heard that it's harder for a diabetic to conceive, don't hold me to this though.

Before anyone tells me I'm too young, as other people have, I'm aware that yes, I'm young. My choice. Please respect it. Not that you have @Sweet_you_ but other people have :*

Best person to talk to would be your Diabetes Specialist Nurse? They would be able to advise you :)

Hi @Sweet_you_ I agree with Shannon, you need to discuss this with your Diabetic Nurse, she will be able to talk you through what steps you need to take to get on target as well as giving you the support you need to make sure that you have a healthy pregnancy, good luck :)

Thank you... yea in consultation with a doctor.. But my main point is to know whether it is tough to conceive with 1 diabetes

Hi - It shouldn't be tough to conceive regardless of your t1 status, we have lots of t1 parents on the forum who can vouch for this. Taking folic acid is a must. Of course providing you both have been checked out and there's no fertility issues, which your GP should be able to advise on this with you, however if you're stressed it's not going to help so try and take it easy.
