Hi All, I am type 1 Diabetes, have been for 40 years now. I am not the most stable with my sugars and unfortunately suffer with hypo unawareness. It started mainly and had many problems when I had my daughter 18 years ago, anyway. I am active but find it hard to loose weight. My husband has started Slimming World and so I am basically eating the same as he is so basically doing the slimming world diet. But finding with less sugar and less carbs etc it is making me low a lot. So I then am needing to eat extra so it doesn't really seem like it is going to work for me. I was just wondering if anyone with type 1 diabetes is on slimming world and how are they finding it and is there certain things / tips they can suggest ?

My diabetic specialist has just done an insulin change lowering fast rapid during the day and moving long lasting to the morning rather than night time to help with the lows at night.

Anyway any advice from those who are on slimming world plan or have tried it would be much appreciated - Thank you.

PS. I have spoken to my local Slimming world team and they don't seem very knowledgeable about type 1 diabetes as some suggestions were just a no go and even my diabetic specialist said this.

I think it’s slimming world my sister goes to

One of the problems is they use a ‘sins’ certain foods have sins and you can have 15 sins a day.. other food is sins free so you can have as much as you want

The issue is the sin free food is things like potato and other carby foods, and whilst this may be ok for slimming, obviously it’s not ideal for diabetes infact several things my sister has said is just totally wrong in relation to the diabetes and diet

Does it work for my sister - she has lost weight, but thankfully she’s not diabetic

A relative of mine works for Slimming World. She said there's a special programme for diabetics. I asked if this included Type 1s and she said it did. I have considered joining but so far have just tried to lose weight myself. Half a stone since the beginning of January but I have the feeling the weight loss is slowing down now. I suppose that happens with any diet.

Are you on fixed doses of fast acting insulin per meal?

Most of us adjust our doses depending on the amount of carbs we eat, so I can have a no or low carb meal today and need only very little or no insulin for that meal, and I can have a high carb meal tomorrow which needs a high dose of insulin.
How do you calculate/decide on how much insulin to take for your meals?
