Type 1 Diabetes complications

The conclusion of the whole of this thread is that now I am totally & utterly confused! I have always tried to manage my diabetes the best I can & had relatively good control over the last 27 years I've had it. The risk of heart disease & stroke is with everyone that is diabetic so who do I believe? There is nothing in Black and White that says which is the correct way to go is there? The medical profession will probably argue amongst themselves forever & never come up with a definitive conclusion. I can only act on what my cardiologist says & what my diabetes consultant says & stick to it unless they say otherwise. The Mediterranean diet seems to work for me as it is healthy & stick to my exercise regime. Thank you all for contributing to this fascinating discussion.

Hi @TERRYBURGE. I fully understand your frustration at not being able to get the holy grail of an answer you're looking for.
I feel that what ever advice you follow the best you can do is believe in it. If you believe what you're doing is the right thing for you then hopefully you can focus on living and enjoying life.
For me, and as I said in previous posts, I'm in no position to really advise you, but I tend to trust and believe the specialists within the NHS for medical direction. As for diet..... I've tried different ones, usually 3 months prior to HbA1C test. I analysis the results of the HbA1C test to see if a particular diet has impacted greatly on my diabetes control.
I also decide whether or not I've actually enjoyed a particular diet. If it's made me feel unhappy or lacking in something then I don't continue with it.
It's finding the balance between results, well being and belief.
I sincerely you find what makes life comfortable and enjoyable going forward.

TheBigNews, I hear what you say but I can't really go ahead & take such a large dose can i without the advice from my gp can I? I only take 10mg as it is but I was on anverstatin & simverstatin before but had bad side effects so I was switched over.
No they'd have to change the dose. They probably went with the lowest dose because you had SE's on the other ones. In general side effects caused by statins are not dose dependent, so you might wanna see if a dose of 40-80mg is well tolerated. Statins do decrease the incidence of a second coronary event by about 30%.(secondary prevention). But you gotta remember not every statin has been studied in every dose either. They aren't as effective in reducing the incidence of a first event (primary prevention) of course because that's different population of folks with a different prognosis than stent patients. DOH. The way I see the diet thing is people will get on a diet that THEY LIKE, and stick with it mostly. And then they'll find evidence from Dr. EatBaconTillYouBarfBaby that shows that it cures the common cold. If it's a diet they hate it'll last about 3 months.
