hi, my partner was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in january and is still no closer to getting his blood sugars under control. they can be very high and then very low so he can suffer with the exsessive thirst at night and the can hypo before dinner, hes on insulin 4 times a day and metformin and has now also been diagnosed with underactive thyroid for which he is taking thyroxine.

he has recently started to get very bad headpains, could anyone tell me if this is a common sympton as i am very worried about him, thanks

If you are worried about your partner you meed medical advice now. I think contacting NHS Direct on 0845 4647 would be a good idea.

However, before I brought my blood sugar under control I used to get regualr headaches. I still get headaches now - I now reach for the meter when I get a headache and often find my blood sugar is too high, usually because of lapse in my dietary control.

i know his blood sugars were 3 when he phoned and he said they were more like sharp pains above his right eye but they are something he has been getting over the last couple of weeks. also he has been very forgetful and doing things like putting his wallet in the fridge. i'll try to get him to see the doctor again tomorrow

thanks

Hi,
Same as Spiral, I too can get a headache-y feeling with a high blood-sugar, particularly if I've over-treated a hypo.
Your partner should see a doctor about the headaches and the poor sugar control. It's important he gets his blood sugars managed, to prevent diabetes complications. He'll feel better too.
There is a charity dedicated to diabetics on insulin called the IDDT (Insulin dependent diabetes trust).www.iddtinternational.org.Tel no. is 01604 622837. They may be able to give advice on helping your partner to manage his condition.
Best of luck
Jus
