Hi all,

I'm Erin and after joining today and taking a look at the forums I thought I'd post and say hi.

I'm a type 1 diabetic and have had the condition for 31 years now - yikes! I was born and raised in New Zealand but moved to the UK when I was 21 and have been here now for 20 years. Again, yikes!

My overall diabetic control isn't too bad, my last HbA1C was 7.3 and I was told by the doctor I saw that I shouldn't aim to get it much lower than that otherwise I run the risk of having too many hypos. I did a carb counting course at my local hospital about 18 months ago and have been carb counting ever since, which has helped me to understand things much clearer.

One of the things that bemuses me at the moment is the recent onslaught of vivid dreams whenever I have a bad hypo during the night. Does anyone else suffer from this? I wake up very disorientated and feel like I'm still living the dream, and it takes some time for me to realise I need some glucose and I'm not part of some weird fantasy world!

Anyway, good to meet you all and look forward to posting more in future.

Erin

Hello Erin!

welcome to the site.

I experience the same reaction as you i was late for work yesterday as i thought my alarm tones had been part of my dreams. was bizarre. Spent most of the day confused also.

im not sure if this is normal and why it does this but it can be a little frightening. Maybe someone else can shed more light.

i just wanted to say hi and welcome :)

Great bunch of people and plenty help too..

I get this too - a confusion between sleeping and waking when hypo. It was a bit worrying the other morning because I opened the bedside drawer knowing that I have to take a thyroid tablet, but something in my non-waking brain told me that I hadn't been taking them every day - thankfully I came round properly before taking an overdose!

In the past when I used to get serious hypos in the night frequently, I have really confused my partner at times because I appeared to be awake but talking complete nonsense!

Oh that is completely what I go through, my hubby thinks I'm mad sometimes I'm sure. But then so do I after I've come round!

Welcome to the forum Erin:)

I've had type 1 the same length of time as you and sometimes forget what it was like to live without the condition, the vivid dreams you experience when hypo I can have on a normal night!

I know what you mean noblehead, I've forgotten what it's like to live without diabetes too! I often wonder what it would be like to be cured and in all honesty I think I'd feel like part of me was missing.

Thanks to everyone for your kind welcome!!

Just wanted to say hello and welcome  31 years is quite a marathon, well done, you are certainly doing the right things. Sorry, dont know about hypos with vivid dreams, hopefully someone will be along to help you out a bit more. Best wishes RRB
ps Erin is one of my daughters names, her dad picked it as he was Irish and I love it :D
