I had a few good people in the early days ,Dr D ,Sister D Great advice off these two Diabetic specialists, they actually cared ,thank you for that God bless . The brain replaces the Pancreas because without a brain you got zero chance.Relying on so called Diabetic TYPE 1 ADVISERS OR IS THAT ENABLERS is mostly negative time wasting,.British Diabetic Association were good their day, then name changed and they were not much cop after that.KETOACIDOSIS was my diagnosis in 82 only had it once since 1983 sediment in urine and pear tainted breath.I am still on PORK INSULIN originally Mixtard now HYPURIN PORCINE MIX,thank GOD FOR THE PIG,A HOLY CREATURE TO PORCINE DEPENDANT DIABETICS. It has been a difficult road as Type autoimmune was rare still is I think TYPE 2 IS VERY COMMON NOW .NO support anymore for TYPE 1 DIABETICS IN MY EXPERIENCE.Hospital was once a year and confrontational with the new types who run the clinic snow...so no bloods or chek up any more not for 3 YEARS,GP waste of time type 2,s are their thing...DINOSAURS. I still function and got my facilities THE BATTLE CONTINUES...THANK YOU.

I haven’t looked at your profile but I’m guessing your from Swansea was diagnosed in 1979 and I too saw Dr D, the specialist nurse I saw was Sister K as I remember , things were a lot different back then , and I do agree that those two specialists were top notch, however I would rather have diabetes now that when we had it originally, technology has made treatment far more efficient , advise sometimes hasn’t followed suit, I think sometimes ( not always) that diabetics are left to “ fend for themselves and aren’t told the basics.
Places like this help a great deal ,, like a lot of medical treatment these days it’s a post code lottery , not only with equipment you can receive but also advice , diabetes is one of the biggest strains on the nhs , maybe some common ground might assist.

Yes ,I know who you mean Sister K never actually met her but heared a lot of good info about her.I was under sister D and she was exceptional woman and had type 1 diabetes herself.Surnames get deleted by the machine often in my thoughts .Everything was a portion 24 portions a day 2,400 calories a day...still on that roughly today.

I still use the portion system today , find it easier , old dog new tricks eh, if I remember Sister K got an OBE or something similar . I remember Singleton hospital having a drop in room where you could go and see the DSN s . Something they could do with today , trying to get hold of a specialist person these days is harder than winning the lottery. I’m in Scotland the now but I still go to Swansea for a Joes Ice cream lol

Guess you have had it a long time .That drop in service was similar to other hospitals I was at.Its all changed now I missed my yearly Diab clinic appointment first time ever and they sent me a letter discharging me from the clinic that was 3,4 years back. They said your GP will monitor you now.The GP sent me a letter saying I was under them that's the last I heared.

First and foremost the NHS has a duty of care to each of its patients. Write to your consultant at the hospital and GP and complain. Also send a copy to the hospital board with the complaint. Make sure that all know what you are doing and copying in to the complaint.
The next move will be your local MP.
If that doesn't work write to the Sunday Papers - they love taking up the mantra and fighting for a cause.
Its absolutely shocking that no one will take responsibility,
Up here is Scotland its the hospital who ultimately takes responsibility - not the GPs at least for type 1. It may be different for type 2 to a certain degree I'm not sure. Like you the DSN I was under has moved on, and my Consultant retired around the same time. (I shed a few tears about that, but hopefully the replacements will be just as good - time will tell).
I've been Diabetic since 1965 and cant fault any of my treatment except for the odd tossers who didn't know any better, but thought they knew it all.
Have a look at the following and see which standards are not being followed for you and point them all out to them just to underline your point. http://www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/documents/1064/24729_Health Standards Framework_2015_E1.pdf
https://www.nhsconfed.org/regions-and-eu/welsh-nhs-confederation. This link may also be a help to you.
Lay it on thick about poor quality and duty of care. I hope you manage to get this sorted out. All the best.

Thanks for the link and other info.1965 that's some time back urine tests?,needles like nails ,steel. heavy syringes. The only person who I liked and respected was Sister D she has now passed on.The rest I dont like they dont like me I guess, complete shower of s*** putting it mildly.I am actually relieved in some ways not to be under their insufferable petty systems.Specsavers check my eyes yearly they are good saves queing at nhs.I will try and get my yearly bloods done .HospitaIs are to look out for type 1 in Wales also same as in Scotland.GP are a last resort for type 1 but it was the consultant with GOD syndrome who discharged me as we didn't get on .Very unprofessional attitude pure narcissist and not a clue about living with type 1.I appreciate your reply thanks.
