Could a dextrose and iron drip I had after a minor operation years ago have caused my pancreas to pack up
at age 46. A hoyle.

Hi. Highly unlikely. Adding glucose in a drip is quite normal and wouldn't affect the pancreas. I'm sure the same applies to iron?

Some people have referred to illness as a trigger, perhaps the operation itself was a trigger, it's really hypothetical what the reasons could of been, i've scratched my own head lots of times to think of a reason and to be honest it could of been anything, it still doesn't change who I am not and what I have to do daily, that's the bit I try to do as well as I can

I wouldn't have thought so. It's pretty common to have a dextrose drip after surgery & having dextrose IV is not going to do anything different to your pancreas than consuming it normally - ie by having a can of coke.

Are you diagnosed type 1? Or do you have some other pancreatic problems - are you 3c?

Type 1 diabetes is autoimmune so highly unlikely.

I was diagnosed as being type 1 in 1998 I have no other problems with my pancreas other than it has packed up.:/

What is 3c?

It's a term for those who make no insulin due to pancreatitis or other causes.

If you are type 1, it's because your immune system has killed off your beta cells. You pancreas does a few other bits & pieces too - not really sure what, so I agree it does feel like your pancreas has packed up but I'm sure it's still doing something, just not makin insulin.

Have you had a GAD test?

Hi, No I haven't had a GAD test but so glad my pancreas is doing something. I felt quite sorry for it.

If you are concerned about what has caused your type 1 a GAD test might help as it tests for the antibodies that kill off the beta cells for a lot of type 1s. But these tests don't give a final answer and are not routinely offered unless there is a clinical reason - it's usually if they are wondering if you are type 1 or type 2 that they do it.
