my partner has recently been admitted to hospital after not being given insulin. he tested his blood sugars which was 30+ and also has a high level of ketones can anybody tell me how long he will be in hospital for or roughly how long these levels will take to return to normal?

When I was first diagnosed nov 2011 I was admitted to
Hospital with high BG and keytones I was only in overnight but I think in depends on the person
I hope your husband is ok .

Everyone is different and it will depend on how he responds to treatment and how long it takes for his levels to go down, and they will also be keeping a eye on his electrolytes as well as being on a insulin iv can affect the potassium levels.

I got to stay in ICU for three days. Yay.

[If they are giving him potassium tablets, dissolve them in plenty of water. Contrary to what the ICU nurses told me, it gets a lot easier to drink because the stuff triggers your gag reflex and burns your lips when too concentrate. Potassium was so low that they made me take tablets every two hours in addition to the potassium IV  ]

Hi and sorry to hear. It is individual depending on response to treatment. At diagnosis I had similar sugars and very high ketones. Spent 3 days and nights on a saline drip and insulin machine to bring down slowly so not to shock the body. hope he has a speedy recovery.
