Type 1 Diet

Type 1
I have always eaten a fairly healthy diet .. freshly prepared meals with veg, moderate to high carb, not a lot of processed foods. Since my diagnosis, I have found that I’m eating more or less the same as before but the only difference is I’m now working out the carb content (as best as I can) and adjusting insulin accordingly (currently using ratio 1u insulin to 10g carbs). Over the past few weeks I’ve seen quite good BG levels whilst following this. My weight has never been a problem.. always been within the healthy range so I guess my question is being a type 1, do I need to try and achieve a lower carb/lower fab/healthier diet or as this seems to be working for me, do I just continue as normal? After dinner in the evenings, I have a cup of tea and a couple of biscuits, (rich tea, digestive) but always adjust my insulin to allow for this. I’m just a little worried that I haven’t made any significant changes to my diet like a lot of others seem to have even though my BG seems to be OK.. Any thoughts welcome. :)

We're all different and one size doesn't fit all, so ultimately you make your own decisions according to what suits you :)

But I eat in a similar way to,you and so my answer would be - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

When I first joined this forum I thought I was doing things wrong. All I could see was low carb everywhere. But now I realise that the majority of Type 1s eat moderate carbs and that the most important thing is to get good control.

So no, you don't have to,reduce your carbs unless you want to :)

Hi @HoneyBea . If you are happy with your bs.levels, weight and diet then I wouldn't change anything.
I've been T1 25 yrs+ and tried a lot of different approaches to food. I eat sensibly, 130/180 carbs daily no junk food, probably more protein than most.
Have reduced carbs with a lchf diet twice and it just didn't work for me.
You can try lowering your carbs if you want but it probably isn't essential in your current control of your diabetes.

I suppose compared to some my carb intake maybe quite high but its my diet.

My breakfast is normally a 90 grams of carbs of oats, sultannas walnuts and milk, very filling and agood start to the day for me. All my other meals tend to be 60 grams of carbs.
Sounds to me as your doing fine.

There are loads of diets around these days diabetic or other. Just eat what suits you not others and as a diabetic yiu already know what foods you shoukd eat in moderation.

Regards

Martin
