Type 1
Hi, my name is Maurice. I have type 1 diabetis and need to lose weight. Is it OK to follow a type 2 low-carb diet? Because all the diabetic diets books all seem to be for type 2 diabetis. Also, the books seem to cater to the Americans.i have downloaded the low carb diet off the diabetis uk website but it doesn't seem to mention type 1 diabetis.
Yours,
Maurice J McNelis.

Hi and welcome to the forum @Maurice McNelis. I just wanted to welcome you to the forum. There are a few T1 members who do low carb diets or at least a reduced carb diet. I will leave it to them to offer suggestions. Again welcome to the forum.

Hi @Maurice McNelis and welcome to the DCUK forums.

I can't give you medical advice but in my experience a moderately low carb diet (less than 100g a day) has helped me to lose some weight and also reduce the swings in my blood sugar. Just be aware that if you go very low carb you may need to start adding insulin to cover your protein intake and you may want to talk to your dietician if you aren't sure how to adjust your insulin doses.

Can I ask how long you've been T1 and what sort of insulin regime you are on?

Once more, welcome

Hi @Maurice McNelis , welcome to the forum.
As a T1 the main difference between us and non diabetics is that they produce their own insulin and we have to inject it.
So we can eat anything we want as long as we can manage to dose for it effectively. (Which can be close to impossible for very high sugar foods, but still.)

A change in diet will mean a change in insulin doses. Are you comfortable adjusting your doses?

I find it much easier to keep my blood glucose stable if I eat low carb, and it slowly lost me some weigh as well, even though this was not my goal.
