Type 1: Eating Out - Nutrition guides

My son went into Wetherspoons again tonight, had same meal again (minus the cake). Not surprisingly, their nutritional information is still the same as before - so frustrating.

Yes, but here in the USA carbs are reported net of fiber and so I have experienced a larger than expected rise in BG sometimes. So sort of the opposite of your discovery of over assessed carbs I think some here are understated.
@SWUSA, Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought you are suppose subtract dietary fiber from total carbs to get final count of carbs? Thanks

This is true in the US but in the UK the total doesn't include fibre and it's listed separately.

To the OP: how many units would he have taken based on the nutritional info given by the restaurant. You said he took half that much which turned out to be correct. What was your "gut feeling" when you did the calculation? Did you think it was way too much? I rarely get nutritional info in restaurants, maybe total calories. I usually go by gut feelings and experience.

Sometimes you really do have to go with your "gut feeling". I went for a taster meal yesterday, about 10 courses, each one approx 3-6 mouthfuls. Some of the dishes even came with edible flowers from their own gardens. I thought how am I going to calculate all this! Blood a little high last night but woke up this morning with a result of 6. Pleased with that.

I do find that the nutritional guides aren't always right. Wagamama is pretty accurate (from experience) but for all other meals out I use the carbs and cals app - it's got lots of photos so you can judge the portion size to have an educated guess at carbs. I find it very helpful!

Not eaten at W'spoons. But do find some places e.g. Strada make it difficult to find out carb counts, could find nothing online and in the restaurant they gave me the allergen list! Also in EAT it took my 20 minutes to manage to explain I wanted the carb value and then the guy gave me a value per 100g, pretty useless when no info given about how much the item weighs, on that occasion carbs&cals was more accurate.

I am not aware of any restaurants which give carbohydrate values. They give the options of vegitarian and gluten free, but not for us! I use the carbs and cals book and have the ap on my 'phone - very helpful.

They do but not all. As mentioned some of the big pub/restaurant chains do, if you do a Google search of a restaurant it will say on their website if there's a nutritional breakdown of the food on offer.

There is now a petition online for all restaurants to list carb values.. last I saw it only had 500 signatures.
A GP Joanne Mccormack is very interested and runs a lot of info courses on liw carbing. She has facebooked the petition out to people asking for signatures.

I normally have a good look, work it out and then .................. guesstimate
