Type 1 for 44 years - my 2 children also type 1 - not her family history (started with me)

Diagnosed age 6 (1980) - first one in the family. Both my boys now grown and at university were diagnosed type 1 aged 2 1/2 and 14 months - shocked the diabetic team.

I am a medical professional, I have always been well controlled. I have however had 8 trigger finger surgeries, 2 carpel tunnel surgeries , 7 shoulder surgeries - was at the back of the queue for decent joints!

The icing on the cake at age 49 - one week ago today I had a heart attack. Normal cholesterol (been on prophylactic statins for many many years - never had a raised cholesterol) BMI 31 - I am now the proud owner of 2 stents (I make it sound jovial but it was terrifying) Feeling a bit angry and sad about it all to be honest as have worked so hard to maintain good control - my whole team are dumbfounded.

Wow, that's a lot of surgeries, and then a heart attack too
I'm not t1 so cant really comment other than to say you've arrived at an informative and non judgemental forum which will be very supportive to you and your family

Welcome to the forum.

Diagnosed in 1976. I’m head-butting 56.
Got no family history either.

But my dad did develope T2.

The only thing I can think of as an “autoimmune” trigger is an ENT issue as a kid?

What a time you've had. I hope you're recovering well.
Type 1 here, no family history. My 2 kids, 5 and 10, have been tested for T1 related antibodies and thankfully none detected.
I've had diabetic frozen shoulder, now about 90% recovered. Presently I have trigger finger in my right index and right pinkie. Grrrr.

I had whooping cough twice in the 6 months before I was diagnosed - my eldest at 10 days of age had strep B meningitis - we were told these were the triggers but my second son diagnosed at 14 months had nothing so ‍♀️‍♀️

I was due for an operation on adenoids? “buzzword” as a kid.
Then type one or “juvinile diabetes” came up. At my 8th birthday. Lol, still thought it was due to the prior as I was admitted to a ward . Then the buzzword changed?

There was a discussion thread on possible causes. I’m personally siding with ENT issues? (As a probable cause.)
 
Hi and welcome WSussex. It’s something eh, when you do everything right but still it all goes pear shaped. I can understand the anger and sadness. You were, however, always genetically susceptible. Then there are the environmental triggers. Still, thats little consolation for you or your family. My brother was diagnosed Type 2 then he got a fever. He was re diagnosed Type 1 . I hope your Health improves.

You have been poked in the eye by that diabetic stick and no mistake.
Type 1 of 50 years here and diagnozed aged 6.
My sister is type 1 as well diagnozed aged 3 and back in the 1970s it was unusual to have a brother and sister with it.

Jog on to now and we both have boys aged 24 and 28 and are unaffected.
I have coeliacs and a frozen shoulder and had carpul tunnel surgery...

I feel your pain and can only wish you well as you deserve some good luck.
