Type 1 Friends

My younger brother is type 1, he has had it longer than me actually, but he is not very pro active with his control unfortunately, but we do talk about it from time to time, and by talk I mean me telling him to get testing and get on a MDI regime.........

I have a few folk on my Facebook friends list also that I have known locally, but don't actually meet up with them.......

I have attended a forum meet before in Glasgow with the diabetessupport forum group......it was really good to meet up with a large group of diabetics of all kinds and to put faces to the names.....

Hi. I became an Insulin dependent diabetic after having acute pancreatic surgery 20 years ago I am 71 years old. Had double knee replacement surgery last year. I have been looking for a forum for type 1 and have not found 1. I am having a hard time keep my A1c down to 6.5. I had it down were my doctor wanted it 6 months ago, now it up again. I get it checked every 3 months. I am on Humalog and Lantus. I would like to find some simple meal that are inexpensive to make, not a lot of cooking.

I did post something about this a few days ago (admittedly in a thread about something else) about how few T1’s I have met over the years. I can probably count on the fingers of 2 hands those that I have known in 32 years since being diagnosed. These also include people that I just met briefly by accident etc.
Maybe one of the reasons is I am not always comfortable with discussing my condition with others, including those “in the club”. I find I become quite defensive about my diabetes and sometimes the last thing I want to do is talk about it.
However when I went on my DAFNE course last year I was with 6 others for a week and it was really interesting to hear their stories and the fact that they go through the same **** I do! I often beat myself up badly when things are not going well (which seems to be fairly often nowadays hence my application for a pump) and you read people on here saying that they freak out when their levels are outside of a normal range when it is happening to me almost everyday and I have lost my driving licence etc. I feel like a bit of a failure so maybe I do need to get things in perspective.
So it probably would be good to meet others more often even if it is just for a bit of a laugh and knowing you don’t have to feel different.

The internet wasn't around when I was diagnosed, so I have found the support, help and advice on here, invaluable.

I am type 1 Diabetic and have been most of my life, I was first diagnosed when i was 6 years old and i am now 22. I would love to have a type 1 diabetic friend/ someone to talk to who understands. I am the only Diabetic in my friendship groups and they don't seem to understand what us diabetics go through. It would be nice to have someone in the same situation as me to talk to.

Met a couple of nice people on my DAFNE course and still keep in touch from time to time, other than that know 1 person with type 1.

This forum is a great place to make friends mind, your never lonely when you can just log on and get all the support and advice you need. Just wish the Internet was around 30 years ago.

I have only had one Type 1 'friend'. In the end we lost touch as he became some kind of halo wearing diabetic. I was going through hell losing my sight and all he kept saying was "why are you making such a mess of your diabetes, it's so easy to control". Well, maybe it was for him but I was having a nightmare with it .

My pump clinic used to arrange occasional meet ups but they seem to have stopped happening lately. It would be good to be able to sit in a pub with people who immediately turn a packet of crisps over and inspect the carbohydrate content rather than looking at the flavour, know what a bg or HbA1c is and laugh about the sheer frustration of being your own insulin provider.

Wouldn't it be a good idea if someone suggested a group from say a specific area got together
I live in Pompie anyone else I know there are 200000 people in Pompie with diabetes but I'm guessing most are type 2.
My Mrs would love to come along and moan about how difficult it is being married to someone with Diabetes too LOL.

Hi I was only saying to my husband earlier this evening I wish I could find a fellow Type 1 who could share their experiences of what a typical day/week is like for them. I have never met another Type 1 diabetic or have any history of Type 1 or 2 in my family. I have gained lots of help and support from this marvellous forum, but I am still in the dark about correction doses, am I being too obsessive with my management routine to name just a couple of areas. Sharing experiences with a fellow Type 1 who has been diagnosed for maybe the majority of their lives would be really helpful. I was diagnosed 3 and a half years ago at 55 years old by way of admittance into A & E and then 5 days in intensive care with ketoacidosis so I understand the "dramatic side" of uncontrolled diabetes, it's scary. All experience/advice very welcome, thanks Carole

I don't have any T1 friends (and actually lost some 'friends' following diagnosis) I would love to go for coffee/a meal with a fellow carb counter

Hey again, does anyone have trouble with their HbA1c? I am always running too high and it frightens me because i know what the consequences are, i cant seem to get it down
it definitely would be nice to meet new people with type 1 to share experiences, I'm only one in my family as well with it.
Have any of you seen online about a cure they think they might have invented? i seen not long ago (it came up on my news feed on Facebook) about a breakthrough for a cure, to do with cells or something?

One of my colleagues on my team has T1, seeing as there are only 13 members of our team that's a quite high percentage. He's had it since he was a baby so is very knowledgeable, I feel like a total wimp compared to him. My mam and younger sister also have diabetes, albeit supposedly type , so I am fairly lucky that they understand the struggles. Although it would still be nice to have someone to chat too that has the same struggles..

There are three type 1s in our office and none of us really ever talk about it - I always think it's strange !

I find that people have somehow don't want to highlight what some might consider a weakness.
I personally think that it is a strength there are three things I know that people without diabetes dont':-
1/ When I am getting a cold (BG increases)
2/ When I am stressed once again (BG increases)
3/ When I am relaxed (BG reduces)
F.Y.I.. the other thing is that all three in my office are men - this maybe the real reason why no one talks about their Diabetes LOL

@AndyOD and @daniT1D are you both close to the south coast line? I am happy to meet somewhere along there. Message me if you are interested.
