hi there new to the site and looking for some help please. had type 1 diabetes for 17 years since I was 6 mabi 8 i think and have always had high blood sugar levels getting worse through my teens mainly because I hated having it and couldnt deal with it, in the last couple of months i got the floaters in my left eye then a detatched retina and basically nackerd my eye and was told I will be lucky to get the vision back. After getting this news I have cracked down on my diabetes control stoped eating rubbish taking my insulins and testing my blood sugar levels. been managing to keep my sugarlevels between 6 - 12 but keep getting spikes of anywhere between 15 - 29 the higher spikes uselly happening after I wake up have increased my background insulin but hasnt made much diffrence is this normal gor someone who has had high blood sugar levels for so long and will these become less frequent? thanks any help would be much appreciated

When do you take your background? I used to spike in the morning but now I split it, I take a smaller dose in the morning and a larger dose at night, that controls my sugars better. However if I sleep in and go over 12 hours since my last background my sugars start to rise.

Could you over be doing it, then adrenaline kicking in and spiking? I don't know, it's called dawn phenomenon, speak to your diabetes team. Maybe think of a pump?

been seing my gp about it as only get apointments every 6 months for the clinic last time I asked about a pump got told no needed to be under control first i think

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I would start with the basics first and make sure that your basal insulin is set at the right dose, you will need to do some basal fasting checks to get it right and the following explains how you should do this:

Once you get your basal sorted look at your insulin to carb ratio's, if you've not done a carb counting course such as DAFNE then I highly recommend that you do so, the following is an on-line version of the course:

If your spiking regularly make sure you are rotating your injection sites, poor insulin absorption can lead to unpredictable bg levels and high postprandial spikes.

Some of us on the forum inject our bolus dose 15 mins (or more) before food to limit bg spikes, apologies for yet another link but Gary Scheiner (Think Like a Pancreas fame) talks about it in the following article:
