Hi All,

Last month I was diagnosed as Type 1 and have been managing myself with insulin for about 5 weeks now.

Whilst my BG hasn't at any time gone really low, I've had a couple of occasions of feeling shaky or head-achy when it's been below 5.

I'm not conscious of having been particularly Hi during this period. Any advice on sensations or changes that I should look out for that might indicate that my level has gone Hi and therefore I should additionally test or take addition insulin?

Thanks very much

John

Hi John and welcome to the forum.

I am bumping your post up in the hope that a Type1 will answer.

Hi John,

No 1 sysptom for most is thirst I would say. Why do you think your bloods are going HI? and how high to you mean by high?

Welcome to the forum John :)

When your bg has been running high for some time you can experience what they call false hypo's (google for explanation) when your bg levels begin to reduce, a hypo for insulin users is considered to be anything below 4mmol/l so your headache and shakiness at 5mmol/l seems to fit well with this description.

A high bg for some people may have no symptoms and it's not until they test their bg that they realise they are high, however some of us can experience slight headaches and a general feeling of all is not right, frequent urination can be one symptom as the kidneys rid the body of excess glucose.

A good book I'd recommend that you read to get a grip on diabetes is Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner, it's a great read and easy to understand with some great advice.

Thankyou all for the useful feedback

Went into hospital with a BG of 32 and emerged a few days later around 10. Now generally managing to be below 7 before and 2 hr after meals

Thanks
John
