Type 1. Just diagnosed. Still in hospital bed.

Hey.

healthy 34 year male just been diagnosed with type 1. Has knocked me for six if I'm honest. So any help or advice I can gain from this forum will be much appreciated

Life can go back to normal?

Welcome to the forum. You will be in shock. Your diagnosis has no doubt come out of the blue.
I'm type 2 but and as such wouldnt be able to help so much but someone will be along soon who will be able to put your mind at rest. In the meantime try and get some sleep. You must be shattered.
 
Kind of depends on what normal was? If you were an astronaut then probably noooo.
If you were a rock star, actor, cyclist, rugby player, footballer, or ‘normal bloke’ then yes.
You’ll need to get your head around some stuff and pay attention but it’ll come good.
 
Hi Dave, and welcome. As you're in hospital I presume you were in or very near to DKA which will have knocked you for 6 anyway let alone the diagnosis - it's not the end of the world - far from it! If you're browsing the forum and picking up hints and tip just be aware that everyones diabetes is different to a certain extent so what works from someone else might not work for you.

Hi Dave welcome to the club, just have to say you can lead a totally “ normal life “ there are a few basic rules you have to follow but apart from them life can be normal. Don’t panic there is plenty of good advice to be had but it will take time, don’t be scared to ask any question cos you can guarantee we’ve all been there , and we’re still here . Try and talk to as many people as you can and within a short space of time you will know your body far better than you did before the old needle jabbing came along .

Hi @Davemills and welcome to the club none of us really want to be in.
Bit of a shock for you when first diagnosed AND an absolute shed full of info to take in all at once. You will be give a diabetic specialist nurse (DSN) take not on what she has to say to you.
Normal life....yes without doubt you will live a normal life BUT it will be a different type of normal.....ie you will have to check your bloods and do some injections every day and count carbs but that will become normal for you in a very short time
ANY questions you have, get them on here and someone will be along with some answers/advice for you
 
Hi and a big warm welcome to the club we would rather not join...............
I was diagnosed at 31 and in hospital for a week. I was shocked and worried at the diagnosis, but, I just got on with it ( I was a newly single parent, with 2 children to look after and care for ) and I'm still going strong.
Get as much information as you can, ask lots of questions and just take small steps, you will get there and it does get better and more manageable in time.

Hi Dave. I was 43 and now coming up to my 3rd year of diagnosis. No history in the family and caught me by surprise.

Personally I don't think my "normal" is better than before, but normal of sorts does return. New normal involves more discipline but it's surprising how quickly a routine kicks in.

We're all different and it took my body longer to bounce back than I expected or was led to believe by the diabetic team. They were a case of "now you're on insulin you'll feel loooaads better". I didn't for quite some while! I have days where it is a total pain in the behind but on the whole it's more of a minor nuisance

Good luck and ask lots of questions. This forum has helped me out so many times.

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the forum. My normality may not suite someone else..
& oddly, as Diakat mentioned earlier I have had a crack at acting & also spent 16 years playing the "rocker."

In your title you mention you're still in the hospital bed. Take it in bite sized chunk style.
Ask anything that might crop up?

Diagnosis isn't "game over." You've just discovered a different level..
 
Thanks everyone. I'm home now (didn't want to leave as they know what they are doing in there and I don't) First couple of injections on my own have been taken. At the moment I don't even know where to start with the questions but I'll scroll those the forum and hopefully pick up some tips. Seeing a consultant tomorrow so again hopefully that will help.....thanks for the feedback
 

Dave - I'm not T1, so don't have any real direct wisdom to share with you. I can say, however, that I have watched many a newly diagnosed member work their way from feeling like a rabbit I never the headlights, to doing pretty, jolly well. Of course, they work at it, but it seems very doable, given time and patience.

For your appointment today, how about starting with a what if list? We're I in your shoes, it'd be along the lines of,

What do I do if:
- My bloods go very high?
- my bloods go very low?
- What is an acceptable range, where I need not be concerned, at this stage?
- How often should I expect to be seeing someone, I need these earl you days?
- Can I have a number for the clinic/nurse/doc, for quick advice should I be going awry?
- can I have a prescription exemption form?
- what's else should I be asking?

Of course, he/she might tell you all that already, but I always write down my agenda for appointments. I don't always get it out up-front, but I always check it towards the end of the appointment, to ensure everything I want or need to be covered is. Whiting a consultation it's too easy to take on board so much information, but not necessarily the answers to our own burning questions.

If you have a wife/partner, or someone going with you today, it could be usefulness for them maybe to take notes too.

I'm sure other will be along with more specific queries, but that's just my brain dump.

Good luck with it all. Just take it steady, and never forget that NHS 111, the forum, or of you are unwell, 999 I see always there.

Better safe than sorry - especially in these early, bewildering days.
 
Quick question if anyone can help. I had a very late lunch today. so I'm not having dinner until roughly 8:30pm which obviously means I take my insulin. I have decided to take my lantus at 9pm every evening. does it matter that I would have taken my novorapid roughly 30 mins earlier
 
No, it won’t be an issue. They have different actions in the body.
 
Regardless when I take my meal time fast acting insulin, I take my long acting basal insulin at same time
 
ok...I think. Readings are still a bit high but consultant today said it will be like that until they fine tune me. He started me on correction dosages so that may help but explained that he didnt want my readings coming down to quickly as I would feel like I was in hypo when I'm not...made a bit more sense today. I'm very into my gym so I kept asking about that which was a bit confusing regarding dosage and food intake. Should hopefully getting the libre thing in my arm soon too
