Some people are upset if they read about or are warned about possible complications of diabetes. It was actually the best thing I did when I read about them (in hospital after diagnosis). It made me determined that it wouldn't happen to me, if I could do something about it, so I've tried to keep within my target as much as possible.
You will get to know what you can eat and what effect different foods have on your blood sugar. You'll have folk saying things like, "Should you be eating that?" It's up to you how you deal with that - as far as I'm concerned I answer (or not), depending on who's asking (sometimes it's just a straightforward "Yes!")
Don't try to take in too much at once. Give yourself a break. I know it will be on your mind all the time but do other things while in hospital. Catch up on reading, t.v., e-mails etc. Don't spend all your time trying to find out everything about diabetes. You need time and you'll learn more each day, sometimes without realising it.
