Type of diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed with type 2 in may 2017 I was 38 at the time. I have never been controlled despite a low carb diet. I’m really fed up with trying every tablet known to man and still having sugars in the high teens when I test my blood sugars.

They have said they will put me on insulin but our diabetic nurse specialist only visits the gp surgery once a month and the last 3 months it has not happened with holidays and cancellations.

As you can imagine I am thirsty and tired all the time and bloods have been as high as 26 lowest being 12.

My average daily meal plan is something like egg muffins which are egg and tomato and ham baked for breakfast. Low fat turkey mince and veg for lunch and similar for tea. I’m trying not to snack but if I do it’s a small banana or an orange. I drink either water or coffee/tea with skimmed milk and no sugar/sweetener.

Assuming type 2 means I’m insulin resistant how is giving me insulin going to work because surely I won’t be able to absorb that into my blood cells either.

I’m confused and disheartened by this. Please help with advice. My last Hba1c was 88 2 months ago.

Unfortunately it is more common than it should be to be misdiagnosed as t2 because you are an adult
There are some tests which can help distinguish between t1 and t2. (Sorry I cannot remember the names of the tests.)
Can you ask for these to get clarification and potentially avoid damaging your body?

Thank you for replying I have asked for these tests and they said no as there was no need. I will push again for them :-)

The banana/orange probably aren't a good choice for a T2, as they are pretty high in carbs. (Though I agree you need the test to see whether you're T1.) Also, you're better off with high fat low carb milk (ie full fat milk or cream) rather than low fat high carb milk (ie skimmed milk).
Have you tried counting up your total carbs in a day to see how many you're actually consuming?

Good luck.

I suppose that's you in the profile picture. HCP's are in the habit of overlooking T1, and even more so in overweight people. Same here, diagnosed with diabetes 2 years ago at 39 years old and close to 115 kilo's. My dr. still thinks I'm T2, I think I'm T1, but I'm lucky to be on insulin and treated as a T1 which works fine for me. Except I didn't lose any weight, but then again, I never have before diagnosis either (Except for my hard drugs period, many years ago, but that doesn't count and I wouldn't advice that to anyone).

The tests you could ask for are C-peptide, which tells you something about the amount of insulin you produce. If it's low, you need insulin.
And antibodies tests. The most common is anti-GAD, but there are more antibodies. If you test positive for any of them you have T1.

Good luck, and I hope you'll get this stupid diabetes tamed in the near future!

Have you been referred to your diabetes clinic at your local hospital or to a dietician? Muffins, orange juice and bananas are all high in carbs, and that's the reason why you are feeling the way you are. You desperately need some help with working out what foods have the highest carbs.

I might be wrong but I don't think Absxx was talking about a traditional muffin rather a muffin made up of egg, tomato and ham which would be low carb. I also see no reference to orange juice rather an orange as a snack. A small banana ie 100grams is supposed to be about 23g but possible due to fibre etc I would only carb about 12g per 100g for a banana and it works fine for my son so maybe not as high carb diet as you think.

I agree that Absxx should be push for the type 1 tests to ensure she is gets the right treatment and support.

Your right when I say muffins I mean literally just egg ham and tomatoes baked in a muffin tray.

I have my diabetes nurse ringing tomorrow but work are being difficult about me taking off at the moment. I will try and push xx

Bananas are the worst possible fruit for a T2, with grapes a close second. The only "safe" fruits are berries eaten with cream or a full fat yogurt as part of a meal and not as a snack. The fructose is the baddie as it is a cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver that leads to insulin resistance. Most, if not all, tropical fruits fall into this category.
