hi,

I’m new to this site and would love to get some feedback on a very traumatic time I’m having with my eyes,
I was diagnosed with diabeties 13 years ago although I feel I had it a lot longer, my sugar levels were not great in my first years as I didn’t take it seriously enough and of course being young wanted to socialise and travel! Any way the last few years my readings have been above 7 but getting them below 7 before and during pregnancy 5 months ago.

When I was around 5 months pregnant my eyes went from very mild retinopathy to proliferative very rapidly in the space of two weeks! I had laser straight away in both eyes, about 3 sessions each eye.
5 months post partum I’ve had another check up..my right eye is very bad with blood vessels and now scarring on my retina they have suggested victrecomy surgery and I have had a second opinion to have injections first instead and see how that goes as the bleeding In my eye that will almost definitely happen during surgery from the new blood vessels will make the risks for my sight huge at this point in time,

I’m booked in in two days to start injections which I feel a lot better about that surgery,
I’m praying for my sight as I have a new family and would love to add to it in the near future, has anyone experienced similar and also wondering if anyone had had the same thing and fallen pregnant ? Would love to hear some stories as getting pregnant again is a huge risk I am thinking?

Thanks for reading my novel :)

Sorry to hear about the tough time you're having but take comfort from the fact that you're being seen by specialists who will have dealt with problems like this before. This page has some relevant information:- http://www.diabeticretinopathy.org.uk/pregnancy.htm

It is advisable to get your eyes stabilised before considering another pregnancy. In order to make an informed decision, you should ask advice from a) your consultant ophthalmologist about risks to sight from a future pregnancy and b) your diabetologist and obstetrician about pregnancy outcomes in women who have had proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Good luck with your treatment.
