Hi all, I am from Ireland and am moving to the UK soon. I have been on the insulin pump for 9 years and have had great care in Ireland, all my treatment and medication free. Can I ask what the process is I'm the UK for gaining treatment/free medical supplies if anyone has information on this?
I will have a national insurance number soon so I just wonder is this all I need and then have to go through a GP or is there another scheme? Thank you!

Hi @NiamhT1

Obviously you'll have to register with a GP asap once you're over here and you'll need to ask them about the medical exemption card. I can't remember exactly what happens, but I'm pretty sure they just have to sign a form to confirm you are diabetic and then once that's sorted you'll get your prescriptions for free :)

Insulin and test strips are covered by the NHS (which is funded by taxes so not free). Pump funding varies according to your needs and your local health authority: not all people with type 1 have funded pumps.
