Hey, I wanted to ask, I have had type 1 diabetes for almost a year now, and was looking to get some multivitamin tablets, but I wanted to ask, is there really any true benefits of taking them on a daily basis or are they just a gimmick and a money making scheme?

Thanks

Lots of Type 1s do take supplements eg Vit D. I take a few myself and I don't consider them a waste of money if you choose wisely.

You will get a lot of different views on this - and I guess that they are all valid - depending on perspective.

My view is that my parents have been taking supplements for about 40 years.
They have also taken care to eat a non-processed varied diet.

They look FAR better and healthier than most of their contemporaries. Glowing skin, bright eyes, shining hair. None of that papery crepey thin skin and dull eyes that you sometimes see on the older generation. If you met them in the street you would probably assume they were in their late 60s, not their mid 80s.

They have had their share of health issues - hip replacements, and my father has T2, but their overall health is excellent, and I am sure that the supplements have contributed to that.

@Brightside of life You may also be interested in looking at information about specific potential deficiencies in Type 1s. I take Benfotiamin for that reason.

I would recommend you at least take vitamin D3. Type 1s are prone to getting osteoporosis and this vitamin helps strengthen the bones.

As Type 2 I take Vitamin D3 and Cod Liver Oil capsules. I'm about to retake Osteocare (Vitamin D3, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc) and Diabetone which is specially formulated for diabetics, It's said if you have a healthy varied diet you don't need supplements but a lot of food these days have lost their nutritional value. Despite these additional props I still have diabetes.

I'd imagine the jury is still out on that answer, but I can't see the harm in taking a daily multivitamin if that's what you want to do.

I've taken a cod liver oil supplement for 25 years and up until about 5 years ago I also took a garlic supplement.

@Brightside of life, this is one of those unanswerable questions and depends almost entirely on the beliefs of the individual...

Some will say that they have clear health benefits, whereas others will say that the whole multivitamin industry is nothing more than a money spinner.

I started taking multivitamins post diagnosis as I believe them to be beneficial for my health. The only issue I have with the concept, is the dramatic variation in cost between products - when the ingredients list on the back is virtually identical...!
