It’s very early days @Gaffer type 1. Five weeks - was it a shock or a relief to have a diagnosis? And welcome to this very exclusive club. And to the best thread on the forum. Have you got an appointment booked with a Diabetes Specialist Nurse, or with someone at a diabetes clinic? If you have, then it’d be a good idea to keep a record of what you’re eating at each meal and what your blood sugars are before you eat and two to three hours after you eat. The timeframe’s often difficult to set for recording blood sugars after you eat but any kind of record will help whoever sees you to assess what treatment you’ll need. What were your symptoms before diagnosis, and do you know how high your blood sugars were then? It’s said that it’s not a good idea to aim for perfect results but on early on as a sudden reduction can have a bad effect on eyesight. To test blood sugars you’ll need a meter. Ask your GP if they can prescribe one for you, and test strips to go with it. Maybe you’ve already got one. I use scales that weigh in grams and have a function that’ll return to zero so that I can add other foods without needing a new plate or bowl, plus a book or app called Carbs and Cals. You’ll be able to calculate how much insulin you need for the carbohydrates you eat when you’re given a ratio of insulin:carb. Maybe you’ve already got one to work with. The record of carb eaten and blood sugar results will help to find out what your individual ratio should be. Good luck.
