Hi

I'm type 2 diabetic on meformin 500mg twice a day.

I've been diabetic for about 5 years and randomly check my blood glucose every morning. I've noticed recently that my bloods are high every morning ranging from 10 to 14. I've slept all night and haven't eaten. Is this normal? Should I be contracting my GP? Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks
Steph

Those do sound high, but dawn phenomenon can sometimes cause higher bloods in the morning. If you are concerned there is nothing wrong with contacting doctors especially if you haven't had a recent review.

Do you check pre meal and 2 hours later? What was your most recent hba1c and when? What is you usual diet like?

Apogies for the questions but helpful to get an idea of what's going on

Hi. Those numbers are a bit high. Yes, do see the GP/DN shortly and discuss further medication. Can you let us know whether you have any excess weight or not and your typical diet. If you are slim or have lost weight recently and unexpectedly it's worth knowing as it can call the T2 diagnosis versus T1 into question. BTW I would suggest testing typically 2 hours after a meal rather than first thing in the morning due to the overnight liver dump effect.

Hello and welcome,

The general advice I have received as a type 2 only on metformin is to ideally keep your levels as low as possible but under 8. The dawn phenomena is real but I would suggest that you start testing before and after meals. that will give you a more complete picture.

For me the possible consequences of uncontrolled diabetes is a big deal and makes me very motivated to keep my levels low.

Good luck and let us know if you start testing before and after meals- keeping records of your carb intake for meals will also help.
