Type 2 and Enlarged Thyroid

Over the past week I've become aware that my thyroid gland is enlarged and slightly tender to the touch. I've read the NHS info site and know that it's not likely to be anything scary but I need to see the GP fairly soon to double check. I'm planning to go on Monday.

In the meantime I thought this would be a good place to ask for other's experiences with this sort of thing

Looks like your post was overlooked @primmers.
As you are going to see the Dr. today please let us know how you get on.

Hi
My thyroid was noticed to be slightly enlarge at outset of the diagnosis of Diabetes 2. Due to few complications things were slow on thyroid treatment but once ultra scanned things moved on at NHS speed. A few appointments at ENT and a scan which lasted about 18-20 mins in total. It was discovered that the thyroid was enlarged and there were nodules. I then had a biopsy by aerated needles (almost painless). The results were inconclusive and it was recommended the thyroid should be totally removed as the radio active iodine treatment or tablets would not be affective. I was given a prescription for Gabimazole to add to my tablet collection. The gabimazole did not appear to have any affect on me but they were to slow down an over active thyroid. The dosage has recently been increased to slow the thyroid even more in preparation for surgery. I saw the surgeon yesterday and he explained all that I needed to know and reassured me Currently waiting for operation appointment date.

Don't fear you will probably be offered the choice of tablets, (for most people all that is needed,), A drink (radio active iodine), Final option surgery which will normally only be undertaken is needed.

There are a multitude of web sites that explain the thyroid and treatments which may explain things better that me.

Hi, I had my thyroid removed many years ago, its nothing to be scared of, the one piece of advice I would offer anyone having this op is, when you wake up remember before lifting or moving your head to slide a hand behind your head and use it to lift your head from the pillow, its the one thing they didn't tell me, as muscles in the neck have been cut and you need the extra ommpf of your hand to lift it. It does take a few weeks for the strength to come back in your neck so if you are a motor bike rider be aware that your helmet may be a bit too heavy for comfort.

Thanks Satindoll, I will try to remember that when I awake from my unnatural slumber. Fortunately my motor bike days are long gone.
