Treat all foot problems as important. I am a type 1 diabetic and have been for 36 years. Never any problems with my feet until 7 years ago when my right foot became so swollen and red that I could not get any shoes on or put it to the ground. Doctor said it was inflammed tendons and gave me painkillers. Nothing happened it just got worse, so I took myself off to A & E who straight away sent me to the foot clinic. Many x rays later and an MRI scan showed the problem. I had Charcot and the damage was done. This is a particularly nasty and dibilitating condition which if not caught in time can lead to a lot of problems. Immediately they transferred me to a special boot called a crow boot for a year until the charcot began to stabilise. Unfortunately now I am left with a very deformed right foot with a rocker bottom and I have to be very careful what I do on it for fear of fracturing bones futher. They cannot operate and it is not reversible, they just monitor it every three months. So far it has remained stable but it does stop me wearing normal shoes and walking for long periods of time, it has completely changed my life. For more info have a look at my support group on facebook under charcot foot support group, united kingdom. So my advice get this problem looked at fast. Badger your doctors by telling them you are diabetic. If they are anything like mine, they will see you straight away. It is probably nothing to worry about, but do not get complacent, every foot problem is important.
