Type 2 and heart disease - advice re diet please

Kimitee

Newbie
I am interested to read about the LCHF diet. I am aware however that advice re heart disease (which I have) is to eat low fat. What to do? I feel conflicted about food choices. I am on statins which may help offset things a bit. Any advice greatly received.

Recent science would seem to imply that heart disease is more caused by high carbohydrate diets than high fat so you might find that the diet that helps reverse diabetes also helps the heart disease.

Statins are a bit of a contentious subject too (at least they are to me) with much recent science questioning their use and effectiveness but I think we need to know about more about you what other medications you are on and diabetes status before we start down that particular road.

In the meantime hi and welcome to our cuddly and helpful corner of the internet.

I have heart disease and eat a LCHF diet. This WOE has improved all my blood markers...Triglycerides way down, HD cholesterol way up,blood glucose down etc. In fact, it seems to be the ideal diet for heart disease.

I was diagnosed with T2 while in hospital having a heart attack, so I understand your concerns around a LC WOE. I strongly suspect that it was my T2 that caused the MI, as T2 is linked to CVD, and my BG was 29 when taken in A&E, with HbA1c of 109, giving an indication of how high my BG had been running. I went low carb as soon as I came out of hospital, after speaking to the hospital Diabetes Nurse on the cardiac ward. It is my belief that keeping my BG at a reasonably normal level is the best thing that I can do to keep my heart healthy. Through LC I have lost 4 stone, and my HbA1c has dropped down to 42 over 18 months. It does go agains everything we have been told about how to eat for a healthy heart, and that is scary for me, but I see the evidence of my own meter and experience how much better I feel for it.
