Type 2
Hi, I've been type 2 for a few months, just recently i returned to playing football, and found that during training i was ok, but on saturday i played a match, and was found to be very tired. I'm looking for ideas of what food to take on board before playing. thanks :D

How old are you?
What was you last HbA1c?
What are your BG readings before playing, 1/2 time & after?
What is your typical diet?
What do you eat before a match & do you eat/drink at 1/2 time?

I'm 71 & play tennis & table tennis, not football - I like a net between me & the opposition
While tennis is not as continuously energetic as football, 2-3 hours of club tennis is demanding. I have frequent drinks of water - every 2-4 games, but no special drinks. I've normally had a meal an hour before playing, & my BG stays 6-7 when I measure between sets. That means my body is maintaining BG & does not need additional carbohydrates. If I don't play, it drops to 5-6 over that period.

I have a fairly low carb diet, which mean I get plenty of protein & fats from cheese & nuts, & I now get my energy from metabolism of fat reserves rather that quick-fix energy drinks. I had to cut my carb consumption to control my BG as I was becoming crippled with diabetes, 2 1/2 years ago.

Hi ian, i don't remember my reading,or should i say i didn't take it in. It was a bit of a shock been told i'm a diabetic at 35. I'm due to go for my review in the next couple of weeks.

Testing my bloods before after and during playing is something i never thought about, thankyou for that idea. As i said i'm 35 and still coming to terms with things. I haven't had any dietary advice, but have found since starting my medication and watching what i eat i have lost nearly a stone 1/2. feel better for it but as in my first post suffering when playing sport.

thanks

Andy

It was a shock at 60 - especially as the helpful Dr told me all the complications I could expect. When you see the DR, insist on getting a printout of your test results. You will be able to understand increasingly the significance & see your progress.

Do you get test strips on prescription? Again try to insist - you need to get your D under proper control, & find what effects you - & what helps you with your sport.
