Having to take these soul destroying injections. Believe me I've asked to go back on my original tablets numerous times,. And the DVLA Medical section.
I am a type 2 diabetic and I have recently been put on to insulin to control my diabetes. The only problem I am having is getting a job as a bus driver, I already hold a bus drivers licence but even though the government have change the law about insulin I'm still finding it very hard. Dose anyone on this forum know what I can do to help myself and can the Dr at medicals for employment fail me because of it. Please help. Thank you

Hi John,

Firstly have you notified DVLA? You must do this immediately as you cannot drive buses again until they say so.

When you have 3 months of readings on your meter you have to get a medical form filled in by a Consultant to say you have good enough control which then goes to DVLA and they decide it you are eligible to have your licence re-instated, if so it will last for 1 year.

Employers in an ideal world should not discriminate against you but they may be less keen due to the licence being restricted to 1 year as come renewal time you may fail the medical and so have to leave.

Good luck in finding work
Angie

Thank you for your help. I'm going for a medical with a bus company all I want to know is can the Dr fail me because I'm on insulin?

thanks

John

I am a type 2 diabetic and I am on insulin, this is a warning to everyone in my situation. I have just had my licence revoked (car, bike, and pcv). My life has been turned upside down. I am livid the DVLA don't care, I was 13 days short of my min 3 months blood sugar test. They don't care who they damage.
They are punishing me because I'm a diabetic on insulin, you tell them the truth and I get the hard end of the bargain. All I can say is if you can prevent it don't go on insulin, it will ruin your life.
Can anyone give the name of a very good solicitor that can help me fight these people.

John

I didn't know they took a drivers license away if you were t2 on insulin I thought only long distance lorry drivers and such would have them revoked until they proved no hypos...so sorry John I hope you are able to get them back x

is there anyone on this forum that is a diabetic Dr or a legal professional that could help me understand what has happened because I am absolutely devastated because they have taken my licence, they have taken everything, I can't even drive my car. I have been treated no better than someone who takes class A drugs. Why do DVLA medical treat people like me like a criminal, they more or less told me it was all my fault.

John.

John,

Did they explain the reasons behind them taking your licence from you?
With insufficient period of tests recorded I can understand them suspending your PCV licence until they are happy you are well controlled.
I can't understand why they should revoke your car licence after a bus medical unless you have suffered 2 or more serious hypos in the last 12 months that needed assistance, as this would lead to anyone's licence being revoked.

If you can give us a step by step explanation of everything that you have done with regards your licence and DVLA since you went on insulin and what DVLA have told you we may be able to give you a bit more advice.

Best of luck
Angie

After the unhelpfulness of the staff at the DVLA medical centre, the Doctor there is God, and his word is final! I have decided to come off insulin as I have never known such ignorance, and persecution out there in trying to get employment. This DVLA medical centre is out of touch. Being on insulin is like being treated like a class A drug addict. Attitudes have to change, and that starts with DVLA, and this Government!
I'm only a small voice, I've tried to get legal aid to fight these people but can't. Looks like unemployment for me, who is going to retrain me for other employment? it won't be this current Government. My prospects are bleak.

Are you sure it was someone medically qualified and not a "box ticker" who blindly follows a flow chart/script.
I agree that they are not "fit for purpose"
I hope that if Scotland do get their independance, they find a better subbie for this task and this triggers a collapse of DVLA.

They can't take your license for no reason. The DVLA can revoke your license but they must tell you why. Being on insulin is not enough of a reason. I am T1 on insulin and have LGV license still. You do need to jump through hoops though. To be honest, it's a pain in the a** but if you want to drive, you have to play the game and follow the rules. You also need to test regularly and have a minimum of 3months worth of readings on your BG monitor. I would suggest you get back in touch with DVLA and ask for the reasons behind revoking your license. Good luck.

I was 13 days from completing 3months minimum. how petty is that! all the rest I passed the medical.
Not unless I was set up to fail? However, I don't want to go through that again! Going on insulin was optional, my God what a mistake that was, never again. I hope they find a cure sooner rather than later!

I agree it's a real pain John but you have to test anyway so it's not really extra work ? Up to you I guess. I had no choice going onto insulin and needed license for work so I had no choice but to follow the DVLA guidelines, even though it is a royal pain ! Maybe you'll feel different after not having license for a while. Good luck though and should you ever decide to try to regain license and want some advice, give me a shout.

This DVLA Medical centre is so out of touch, like the Government. So heartless with no compassion. I never want to be held to ransom again over employment. We need a cure for Diabetes, not drugs that persecute, and put up barriers against employment.
