Type 2 and Loneliness

Many of the experiences I read in this thread ring so true with me in trying to manage my T2 diabetes.
For about 15 years I have been diagnosed and not really taken things seriously to do anything about my levels.
However after an unknown light bulb moment some months back I have decided to take matters into my own hands.
Reading these forums I embarked on trying to reduce my carb intake and measuring my BG with a finger pricker.
Sadly the first hurdle to overcome was my own family, nearest and dearest who had difficulties with me having a different meal to the rest. Initially labelled as awkward and "faddy" because of cutting out completely rice, pasta, potatoes, pies and bread. Same went for biscuits, cakes, pastry and ice cream etc. Perhaps you can see why becoming a T2 was almost inevitable.
Thankfully my wife became more supportive and the kids just accepted that "Dad has gone mad but he is getting on a bit."
Other hurdles along the way were work colleagues who couldn't understand my abstinence from either sandwich shop or canteen lunches. Same goes for social friends and family trying to convince me that cutting down on drink will only make me feel miserable.
I have found that non diabetics have little understanding of dietary requirements because as others have said it has no specific label. It is not a particular allergy to food (unless of course you include carbs,) it is not Gluten, Coeliac etc etc.
My advice is just to crack on with your own agenda, turn the other cheek and do what you think is right for you. I have tended to find that after time people do come round to your new way of life and don't think you are totally crazy after all. As an added bonus your low carb choices do actually bring down the BG readings and hopefully improve general health.
Sorry for rambling but just a crazy Dad venting a frustration or two.
