Type 2 and Metformin side affects.

3 Years ago I had to go on drugs: Tried:
Metformin 500mg, 1000mg
Metformin SR 500mg
Gliclazade MR 30mg
Dapagliflozin 5mg
Linagliptin 5mg
Then STOPPED July 17 Linagliptin and also Atorvasatin, HbA1c 42, but crept up to 49!
So tried on Sitagliptin 50mg Started Jul 3rd 2018, now Oct 12th HbA1c 42 (diet change as well)
I was not good on all the previous drugs, Sitagliptin seems Ok but only on a low dose.
Need a good DR ready to help find right drugs.
 
I was unsuited to metformin although no side effects it just didn't work for me and I was changed to sukattro
 

Oct 17 put on Metformin for LIFE, 4 x 500mg SR, HbA1c 87mmol/mol I only took ONE tablet a day.

As diabetic nurse could hear but not able to 'listen' to me, letter of complaint means I have all my reviews with my GP now I let my knife and fork become my weapons of choice..

So 3 months later HbA1c 50mmol/mol, Dr took me off the Metformin [horrible side effects] to see if it was the change of diet or the pills,

Went back at 6 months HbA1c 42mmol/mol. Congratulated and told to carry on doing what I'm doing!

1 yr anniversary HbA1c now 31 mmol/mol!

My knife and fork beat any pills hands down, as they have put diabetes into remission, pills only act to slow down progressive chronic illness xx
 
My husband is T2 and started on Metformin, he also suffered all the same side effects, so was changed to Sukarto, and now these are doing exactly the same, he's seeing the diabetic nurse on Monday to see if there is something else to try.
 
Due to having a mild IBS (no way did I want to even try Metformin) I opted for Jardiance (Empagliflozin) and have had no side-effects at all. 25mg once a day. Dropped my BG from 13-17 mmol down to 5-7 mmol (along with a bit of diet change) and dropped from 195 lbs to 160 lbs. Before using any medication I dropped from 210 lbs to 195 lbs through diet - and I admit my "diet" is not a stellar performance but a big change from the way I used to eat. If switching medication make sure to segue into the new one and do not stop Metformin completely and go onto another med.
 
I was allergic to Metformin as well and GP put me on Forxiga and Gliclizide. I have not had any real problems on this combination. Although some people can develop thrush from Forxiga which is a listed side effect. Hope that this info helps.

doc has put me on gliclizide 30mg MR once daily. See if that helps?
 
Hi. I'm a new T2. My first Hb1ac was 60. Lost stone in a month cutting the carbs and went back to surgery feeling very smug to learn it had gone up to 78. On metformin MR but when I test my bg in morning it's anything between 16 and 22. Its been a month but nurse says not to come back until December. My pharmacist rang to check how I was doing and says to go back now. Have lost another stone and a half but don't think the metformin is working for me. I'm frightened
 
I was very sick initially on Metformin and could not take it twice a day. I now take it once a day and Sukkarto in the evening. So far, so good for me.
 
With blood sugars that high and continued weight loss I think it best you go to the doctors and try to get referred to a specialist. Do you have a record of your sugars to show the GP? That would be good evidence.

It seems different course for different horses..meaning I needed to take Nesina Met 12.5/100. I had taken the Metformin alone that didn't work Doctor kept giving me heaps of extra things Forxiga that seemed to work well for a number of weeks then hell hit absolutely wrong medication for me side effects depression, numbness of mind, constipation then too scared to leave the house - diarrhoea, burning of rear , fresh blood gushing was final straw. Within a week all right after stopping Forxiga I changed doctor am now down to 1 drug as above plus Vit D even though I live in Aust I had a massive low level in Vit D.
So as I said what works for one may not work for another. By the way, my BG is down to 6.1 this morning with all the 'extra' drugs was around 8-9 go figure.
 
 
I've been on Metformin (2000mg/day) since 2007 and Farxiga (US version) I split a 10mg tablet in half.
I used to take Farxiga in the morning, but it seemed to make me irritable and "brainbuzzed".
So I switched to night time and combined with a low carb diet I have a lost a stone in weight over three months whereas before I couldn't lose any weight.
My doctor wanted me to take 34 units of Tresiba (insulin) but I had symptoms similar to yours, so I checked on the web and found the correct dosage for my weight (24units) but I have gradually reduced it to 12 units.
All the best with your search for medicine that works for you and not against your body.
 
500mg 1xday, I can feel a lot of numbness in the limbs upon slightest pressure sleeping, sitting, resting hands or feet against any surface. Especially in the last finger of my hands.

Seems like metformin is giving rise to b12 deficiency / absorption, Neurobion helps.

Diet is moderate card - moderate fat. HbA1c down from 7.1% to 5.7% in 3 months.
 
I would go back and have discussion with doctor. Thrash out any worries you may have.
 
That must be frustrating. Are you testing before and after meals? That will help you to see what impact different foods are having on your bg and will allow you to get better control. You may still be eating too much carbohydrate.
 



Hello there!

It's my first time here in this forum and I just wanna quickly share my personal experience. I was diagnosed with hyperglycemia 5 years ago which is associated with type 2 diabetes and I was told by my doctor to take Metformin every after meal. I never really had side effects and I was so grateful that my blood glucose went to normal but then taking it 3x a day made me really skinny after all and so from 500mg, I started to take 250mg 3x a day. After 2 years, I started reducing taking metformin to 1x a day and from there to NO metformin at all. I haven't been taking metformin for the last 2 years and I just really do a proper diet and exercise. Every time I do my blood test, everything is normal. So I think, you can reduce the risk of diabetes just by taking the right amount of food, less cholesterol, low carbs and daily exercise. But still, everything depends on the person, on the level of diabetes you are in and you got to ask your GP I think.
