Type 2 and pregnant

Insulin
I am nine weeks pregnant and have known I'm diabetic for over a year. Because of the pregnancy I was put onto insulin two weeks ago as I was taking metformin. I regular check my sugar levels because of this and they remain high regardless of what I eat or that the insulin has been increased twice in the fortnight. I am so unbelievably stressed and upset. Not helped by ongoing depression problems without medication now. I'm so scared my baby will be hurt by my diabetes and I feel absolutely useless to prevent this. My diabetic specialist just seems annoyed that my bloods aren't doing what they should but I'm at a loss at what to do. Can anyone that has gone through the same uncooperative sugar levels during pregnancy give me any reassurance as I feel doomed right now :(

Hi kirsty,

I will bump your post up so that it does not get lost.

I hope someone will be able to help.

Is this your first baby? Congratulations! I didn't have an easy time either but we are resilient and so are babies? What do you eat? If it's low GI then @catherinecherub may be able to help, if it's LCHF then perhaps I can help?

Yes it's my first baby and sorry I don't know what either of those are. I'm not very use to being diabetic nevermind using insulin and regular sugar level checks. I try not to eat sugary foods or eat foods I know have a less amount but I think with hormones it is gonna be very hard to control anyway. My readings vary from day to day my lowest reading in three weeks is 5.4 and my highest a whopping 19.7 I can barely eat anything and get a high reading and have a decent meal and my reading is lower which is frustrating cos my readings aren't telling me what I'm doing right or wrong. The other day we had a treat of a takeaway and after I had a reasonable sugar reading but sometimes just after having a glass of milk if I can't manage any more through morning sickness it increases a lot more. It doesn't seem to matter what I eat or how much my readings don't make any sense to me x

Ok. LCHF is short for low carbohydrate, high fat. It's very counter intuitive. You try and avoid rice, bread, potatoes and pasta. These are starchy carbs and for some people they raise your blood sugar. I am one of them. If I eat those foods, my bs goes into double figures. Instead you eat lots of veg, meat, fish, eggs. You eat cream and cheese and nuts with limited amounts of fruit, preferably berries. So I might have salmon with green veggies and a hollandaise sauce. I might then mix frozen berries with cream and a bit of sweetner to make homemade ice cream. You avoid fruit juice, fizzy drinks and squash. Put cream in your coffee - milk contains some sugar. Brekkie might be 97% meat sausages with a poached egg or full fat plain Greek yoghurt with blueberries. Snacks are cheese or nuts. Lunch might be tapas. You could try this diet and see if it helps. You may need to watch your insulin as you can go low. If you go on www.dietdoctor.com you'll find out more. I appreciate you don't want to lose weight but people do eat this way and maintain.

Hi kirsty.

I do know that pregnant mums should make sure that their readings after one hour are no higher than 7.8. What advice have you been given about your food intake? Have you had any guidelines for what to do when morning sickness strikes? If your answer is no to these questions then you need to make an appointment and ask for some guidance, especially as you are on insulin.
We could give you some help food wise but I would be loathe to do this without knowing what your HealthCare team have advised. Judging by your posts you are floundering without much knowledge as to what you should and should not be doing. Make an appointment, write down what you need to know and make sure you get some answers. This is a crucial time in your pregnancy and we all want the best for you and your baby. You could print off your posts on this thread and show them to your HCP and see what answers they give you.

You really need some advise from a Type2 who has had a baby whilst using insulin.

Take care,

CC.

I agree with Catherine. You need some help from your medical team. Have you met your midwife? I had complications the first time round so the second time round, I saw her at 6 weeks.
