type 2 and the five two diet

Messages

Hi,
I have type 2 diabetes and my doctor who runs the diabetic clinic suggested the 5 2 diet to me. I have read this is not suitable for diabetics, help I'm confused.

i tried this and was really ill on the two fasting days. really craved bread especially. i would not recommend it. the best diabetes diet i have been on was tesco diets diabetes support. i lost over 15kg on it in 9 months

If you Google it there's lots of info out there. You do eat on the fasting days, but less calories.

I have type 2 and have joined slimming world I have been doing it for 2months my b .s. have stabilised in the 5 -5.7 range never hungry and eat lots fruit ,veg etc have found it so easy I have lost 10lbs and do the healthy eating option designed with diabetics in mind :)

The five and two should work as the "fasting days" are similar to the Newcastle Diet which is 800 cals a day, some people would get carb cravings, but reducing carbs helps lower your bg in my experience.

I preume this is for weight loss prurposes?

I tried it for while after plateauing with a 1500 net cal low carb diet. I ate less than 800 cals on the fasting days. it kick started my weight loss again and It worked for about a month before it in turn stopped being effective and I plateaued again, so I went back to a general low carb diet based on around 1500 net cals a day which then became effective again.

I am type 2 so not eating much for a day didnt really have any adverse effects on my BG's at all, in fact I suspect it would have brought my averages down slightly. I have found that for weight loss if you hit a plateau then changing your diet slightly to throw your metabolism a curve ball does get things moving again.

The five two is an excellent choice for type 2
I did it at the begining of the year and had great results
The key is seperating out your days and also be sensible on your non low cal days
My wife was amazing at creating great 200 cal stir gets and exciting salads
There is an amazing amount of food you can eat if you work hard at it ( like everything in life)
It's all about confidence and common sense
Many people start with the perception it's about eating like a rabbit
But remember where you are starting from you have been abusing your system for a long time drinking alcohol eating sugary foods , food high in carbs lots of rich food full of salt ! Oh no , you say I only eat low fat stuff and can't shed the pounds ! Have a look at the ingredients in those things full of chemicals and preservatives ! Preservatives - chemicals used to preserve the natural progression of breaking down and decomposing ! As a nutritional it's friend said to me " what makes you think that preservatives that can resist everything that is thrown at it for months as it sits on shields, warehouses, or shipping pallets, will suddenly be broken down by your body quickly ?"
So you need to get rid of that **** first before you can move forward
The 5:2 diet really got my health back on track and as the confidence grew I got back into running. Lost weight and lowered my BGL - from 26.2 - 18.1 but I do like my wine and beer !! So after my first stint and a few moments of common sense it started this week on the new castle diet .
I cannot express what a turn around this has been I am now after 5 days gone from 18.1 to pre diabetic 7
The plan is to run the course of the diet as I am like a bouncy (47 years old) teenager right now and then go back to a regular 5:2 after I am back to normal.
Other cultures have taught us that fasting and a balanced diet prevents all the nasty killers we have in the Western Hemisphere . So I look forward to enjoying my large 200cal stir frys massive salads and soon get back to eating all the great home made cooking I am now used to using quality non preserved foods and on my non fasting days the odd glass of wine
I sadly watched my father die a few years ago from liver failure which was bizzarre as he was a teetotaler but was on a large amount of metformin glyclaside to control his diabetes! I have fought for a few years with doctors that taking these drugs longterm is surely not the only option
Whether 5:2 or newcastle diet , if anyone said a month of not eating your normal food or a lifetime on drugs and liver failure I would take the former everytime
Yes it can be difficult at times and takes hard work and dedication (as does everything worth doing) but you have done the most difficult part by saying you are going to change and everything else is actually easier
I wish you well and hope you inspire more people to make a change

Hi all, this is my first post and I read all your posts with interest. Let me say I am not diabetic but being a 65 yr old male and showing a BMI that informed me I was obese, (and rising) I was worried. I was worried that I was at a high risk of Diabetes, various cancers, heart attack, stroke etc. For me having tried (and failed) various diets the problem is a phsycological one. I was eating through boredom as much as anything else so, like some posters here I went onto the 5:2 lifestyle. The weight loss was a welcome positive but the main goal was inner health and what inner health fasting could do for me. I joined and contributed to the 5:2 forum and like this forum found a host of like minded people including some diabetic sufferers and some pre-diabetic or in danger of contracting diabetes.
The comments were a great support, reading peoples worries, trials and tribulations showed me that we are all different, that certain things work for some and not for others but that we are not alone. I lost 23 lb in aprox 6 months, put some back on and at present am stuck with a weight loss between 14 and 16 lb. I still do the "fast" diet, today is a "fasting day" and for me, 95% of the time they are easy to do.
It is difficult to change the habits learned over thirty, fourty or 50 yrs of bad dieting but I plug away. I would suggest some of you visit the 5:2 forum if you have not done so if only to see how other people attempt to improve their health who do not have diabetes or who do have it and like you are trying to change or address the illness. I am not selling the 5:2, we are all different, it works for me in my effort to loose weight and help prevent the onset of diabetes. The comments posted on these forums also help inspire me to carry on with my efforts to loose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle and so avoid the rest of my life on drugs to control illness. I admire all who take positive steps to over come diabetes so good luck to you all.

re. Cinema Snacks
I am a lawyer (Professor of Equalities Law) with Type 2 .
Under the Equality Act 2010, All service providers are required to make 'reasonable adjustments' to allow disabled people to make use of their services.
Unreasonable adjustments would be if the cost was excessive, or if it would damage a fundamental aspect of the service.
Taking alternative snacks to the cinema could not be said to cost the Cinema anything, (as you wouldn't buy and eat the stuff they do offer) nor does it damage the fundamental nature of the service.
Take what you think is appropriate, if any problems ask to speak to the manager - preferably to one side away from the cinema queue. Explain you are disabled with diabetes, and that a requirement of your treatment is to regularly snack on low glycemic products - such as nuts (or whatever you take), and not to drink high sugar content drinks.
Explain that the Equality Act 2010 requires them to make reasonable accommodation for disabled people to allow them access to their service (i.e. watching films).
By this time - any manager with any sense will say "Go on, and I will speak to the staff about ensuring access with food for diabetics"
If the manager has no sense, state that you will bring a claim for disability discrimination under section 6 and section 29 subsection 7 (the requirement for service providers to make reasonable adjustments) of the Equality Act 2010.
Even a manager with no sense will generally let you in by now. If they don 't, leave the cinema without making a fuss and file a discrimination claim at the County Court.
all the best, Stephen

Funny enough(or not funny) I've been on the 5-2 diet since the start of the year (just talked about it on another post on the site)after watching the BBC Mosely program. But since I've been told I'm a type 2 last month I'm not sure if its a good idea to contiue but my GP just smirked when I bought up the diet in conversation.
