Type 2 and the flu

Meahzie

Newbie
Hi I am a new member as a type 2 diabetic I am suffering from the flu had the jab not worked. Now my question is my gp has prescribed me antibiotics has anyone else had this only went to see him to see if there was anything safe for me to take as my BM is all over the place

How odd. Flu is a viral infection and antibiotics won't have any effect on it. I'd be surprised if any doctor would prescribe them for you. Maybe you have a bacterial infection that's giving you flu-like symptoms?

The flu jab isn't 100% effective; every winter they have to make a guess as to the strains that will spread through the UK, often based on what was rife during the previous winter in the Southern Hemisphere - which is why we've got so-called Aussie flu this winter - but sometimes they guess wrong.

To revert to your original question, I've certainly been prescribed antibiotics for an infection since being diagnosed as T2 and so far as I know, they're perfectly OK for diabetics so long as - like non diabetics - you don't have an allergy to them. Hope you are better soon.

Hello,

The only reason I can think of as to why the GP has prescribed you antibiotics is if he/she thinks you have a chest infection brought on by you having the flu.

As stated above @jay hay-char the flu is a virus and.antibiotics will have absolutely no affect.

Anyway a big welcome to the forum :)

I have had the worst of a sore throat I have ever had in my life and felt like death warmed up for two weeks after the first week I went to see the Doctor as my levels were all over the place and I had lost my voice ... he prescribed antibiotics as he said I had a sinus infection, in the last week my sore throat got worse but by the 5th day had gone from hurting me on the left side to the right side of my throat I finished the antibiotics yesterday and my throat not so bad today I dunno whether the a/b were making me feel worse or was the infection but am so glad I am off them now
