Type 2. Are you taking Statins?

I was offered statins and refused. Even had it put on my notes, but the nurse said I will be asked every time. They will run out of breath before me.
 
Well, the GP is wrong. I am T2 and I will not be taking statins, ever. So he needs to change what he says from now on to "all except one T2 will end up on statins"
 
I was at 'risk' because of family history.
I was prescribed stains and lasted three weeks because the side effects were giving me higher blood sugars and giving me leg cramps.
I was taken off them straight away.
My doctor said he had to try them, but the logic defied me. As all my life signs were in the normal range! If he went on my life signs, I wouldn't have been put on them in the first place, no need!
Statins are good for those with heart problems but they are not preventative meds unless you already have a heart scare or have had a stroke.
There is a lot of controversy about statins.
 
I have been on statins for about five years. I had some muscle pain in my upper arms and shoulders and stopped taking them, but my GP said to persist, and the muscle pain did stop after a few weeks. My cholesterol level is 4.7, and I will probably stop taking them if it falls to 4 or below.
I think it's not just all diabetics who will eventually be on them, but everyone over 50.
 
I was on statins and came off them when I started having dizzy spells. They also pushed my hba1c up from 48 at diagnosis to 54 - it's now dropped to 36
 
Thanks everyone - really good to hear from you. It would be interesting to see how many of the over 50's on the forum are on statins......
 
I was prescribed statins when I first. saw the GP after diagnosis but I refused and my cholesterol levels came down with the change in diet

My GP told me that when I was diagnosed in 2007, Best Practice was to prescribe Aspirin but now it's statins. He wouldn't even ask me, he knows I think they're dangerous rubbish. His practice nurses have tried to get me on them but I refused.
 
Have just written a long response on the other statin thread so won't repeat here. What he may have meant is that all type 2s will be offered statins as that is the current NICE guideline. I think it's wrong and my belief is that it won't be diabetics who bankrupt the health service but the class action by all statin users when they realise the damage it is doing to them.
I was horrified when my doctor actually said she'd like to put them in the water. I nearly quit the surgery on the spot. Now my thought is to stay and try to get her educated on the reality of statins.
 

My personal opinion on the link is that now studies are showing cholesterol levels are not an issue they are trying to push statins for other benefits so now it's not statins lower your cholesterol but they supposedly reduce your 'cardiovascular risk'. Yeah and you want to keep yor profits Mr drug company. Who sponsors much medical research. Drug companies. Who loses out now cholesterol levels have been shown to not be a problem. Drug companies. What do they do - try and find new reasons to take their drug. I bet once they go out of patent no one will want you to take a statin.

and I agree with seadragon that we need to draw our own conclusions -based on an informed persepctive!
 
Taken statins for about 8 years they lowered my cholesterol l was in the 7's now about 5. No side effects to date so no reason to stop them but I would stop if I did have any side effects in the future
 
don't stop taking metformin, been proved to be very good for you in helping to prevent other diseases,ive been on them since 2000 and I never seem to get ill at all in any way, and I take a lot of other tablets aswell as insulin too ,I was taken off simvastatin because my doctor said id been on them long enough and he said its not good to be on them for the foreseeable future.
 
I was on Stain for my heart problems ... for about 10 years .. I was to ill to function .. pains in arms and retaining water because I was in to much pain to move ... I asked and asked if this was due to the stain.. and told NO .. I had heart failure and it was that ... diabetes was the best thing that has happened to my health .. finding this group, eating LCHF & I feel great .. have cut my tablets down fro 15 to 5 and dumped the stain ... I feel 20 years younger and now am trying to make up for the wasted years when the tablets stopped me from doing everything ....
I am with @Mike D on this ...Will never go near them ever again. Rather go the the next life before I'd take them
 
I am 52 and have been on statins for nearly 2 years now but it was prescribed because I had raised cholesterol levels and a family history that put me at risk, they were also prescribed before they discovered I was T2.
I did suffer from leg cramps after about 3 or 4 weeks and was pre-advised by the specialist that if this was to happen to come of the tablets for 2 - 3 weeks and try again which I did and I have not had any problems since. I know of other people who cannot take statins because of side effects, but there are several different statins so it could just be trial and error getting the right one.
