Type 2 For 2 years - stopped medication

Been on Gliclazide for around 18 months but the last couple of months my sugar has been getting really low - under 4 a lot of the time making me feel shaky/weak and nearly passing out.

Stopped taking pills altogether 3 weeks ago and readings regularly around 4-5 mark - still feeling iffy.

What has changed ? - just before i visit my useless GP !
 
Sounds great that Rochy! What have you done to change things because it is likely something that you are doing that has led to the improvement? Have you changed your diet?

To be honest I haven't changed a lot - seems odd but I feel like **** and need to eat something sugary to pull myself together.
 
Hi again Rochy,

I've never heard of anything quite like it without change to your diet. Have you been eating less carbohydrate - in particular, cereals, bread and potatoes - but rice and pasta too?

What were your HbA1c or blood glucose levels before you went on the medications?

Someone else might have some ideas.

Just a thought, I wonder if you have been running higher bg levels and whether this feeling so rubbish could be as a result of suddenly having lower bg levels. :?

Hopefully someone else who has had this experience will be along shortly.
 
I stopped getting high blood sugar symptoms - the usual ! I don't need to go into them ! and all of a sudden this change.

No idea my last hba1c was 6.8 in November before that 7.9
 
The symptoms sound like hypo symptoms and that would be because you've started going low.

However, I can't imagine why you are at levels of 4 and 5 and often going under 4 without any medication unless you've changed something in your diet and exercise regime. As well as the lows are you getting highs too - for example double figure readings?

Hi Rochy,

It's your low numbers without medications and no change to diet that is the strange thing as far as I'm concerned. I'd discuss it with your GP fairly quickly and ask his opinion.

Have you tested out that your meter is reading correctly?

I can say for definite that it is not because you have been running high previously that you have the shakes and sweating at 4-5, as you have explained that you have been running lower than this on your previous medication.

I really think you need to discuss this matter with your gp or diabetes care team. The figure 4 is considered to be 'hypo territory, so it is certain that at this number or below you are going into a hypo. As I say, best get this checked out to be on the safe side.

Hi there I am very interested as my husband is also having the problem of low readings especially after taking his meds....he has lost some weight and is also more active but I don't know wether to try a couple of days without meds or see what his latest blood test says first. He is often at about 3 in the evening and feels unwell. He takes Glycazide morning and metformin lunchtime but low doses of each.

I would be reluctant to stop medication without first speaking with his doctor. Being low at 3 each evening needs to be adressed quite urgently, it may mean he needs a lower dose or a change in meds, or hopefully non at all. Best book a appointment!

I agree - I would never change my medications without discussing with my doctor. To do otherwise is not a very good idea really! Go and see him that's what he's there for!
