I am 50yr old male with recent history of cancer but in remission.

Been getting severe pains just under ribcage since October. Went to A&E and twice told blood sugar slightly high and had hba1c in November but doc said all fine. About 6 weeks ago pains came back. Then came rapid weight loss - 2 stone in a month - massive thirst, extreme fatigue, peeing for England. Tested urine at home and showed v high glucose and v high ketones doc tried to convince me not diabetic because of rapid onset of symptoms. 2 Fasting BT shows high
bs.

Eventually saw pn at gp surgery on Friday. My glucose was 25mmol/l. She sent me straight to hospital as she said she felt I was type 1 and needed insulin ASAP. When I saw the dsn she said because I was overweight by a couple o stone it was type 2

Glucose level today is 30ish before meals and I'm hardly eating any carbs at all. I was put on 10 units of insulin with a telephone review tomorrow.

Is this deffo type 2 and do I have anything to be concerned about as the dsn was so laid back?

Hi and welcome. Catheriencherub has made the relevant post that it is possible you are a Late onset T1 where rapid weight loss at diagnosis is a clue. I can understand the nurse saying it would be T2 due to your excess weight. In practice it could be either or both! There are two tests that could be done to help diagnose T1 but in practice the treatment routes are similar. First a low-carb diet is needed and some tablets as well if needed. If up to three tablet types and the diet still don't bring your blood suagr into the noraml range then insulin will be needed. Quite a few of us have been down that route. I'm still offically a T2 as my GP doesn't understand that T1 can come on at any age but finally got moved to insulin and everything is fine. I lost a lot of weight at diagnosis and have never been overweight.
