Heeeeeeeellllllllllllllllpppppppppppp!

Diagnosed type 2 last July with hba1c of over 13! Now managed to get hba1c down to 6.7 taking metformin and sitagliptin, and if i'm honest my diet hadn't been quite as controlled as it should have been, nor have i done much excercise so that's mostly down to the meds.

Diabetic nurse has been very supportive, and now bg is down said she's happy for me to try for a baby, and that i'm fine to keep on taking meds, and refers me to diabetes in pregnancy consultant at local hospital for diabetic preconception clinic. Appt has come through for July.

Bang, preggers before i can blink, nurse is on holiday, dr who gp's reception tell me is 'diabetes' expert (yeah right) just says 'oh well we'll have to put you on insulin, and i'll get you the form for maternity exemption.'

I have managed to bring the appt at hospital forward to tomorrow, i'll only be 6 weeks but the consultant now tells me i should be stopping sitagliptin immediately and taking stronger folic acid than you can buy in boots.

I'm now in a panic coz i'm getting different messages from every direction and whenever i try and research it most articles are more concerned with gestational diabetes.

Anybody else on here type 2, pregnant or been through it, or have any advice????

On the upside it has made me bbok my ideas up with the diet side of things, really daren't let bg get high, no chocolate since i found out, thats unheard of for me!

Here is a link to the NHS Choices website Pregnancy whilst a Diabetic. Scroll down to the section marked: Pre existing Diabetes. The information there should help out and it does clarify what may happen regarding treatment.

Basically, it would seem that Insulin may well be one option, especially as you will be stopping the Sitagliptin. There will need to be other measures taken as below. This is something you need to discuss with the Consultant and make sure you know what is happening and exactly why. Write it down if you need to. I would listen to what the Consultant tells you.....he/she is the Expert in these matters after all.

Folic Acid should be increased in Pregnant Women. Taking folic acid helps to prevent your baby from developing birth defects. Your diabetic treatment regime may remain the same during pregnancy, or your team may adjust it, depending on your needs. Some drugs that you're taking for conditions related to your diabetes, such as high blood pressure, may have to be altered.
