Type 2
Good morning all, I was told in December im type 2 after Finally getting a fasting test that showed me over 15. I'm on Metformin 500mmg in the morning and another 500mg in the evening, but for the 1st 3 weeks I was on that and Gliclazide aswell but after 5 or six really bad spells I was asked to stop them.

A few questions. My Nurse advised me to switch to a diet that's basically slimming world. She's said, 50g of carbs per meal daily and then protein and veg. I've stuck to this but reading some of the forums wonder if im getting too many carbs, I hope not though. I average around 15,000 steps a day so do move around a fair bit and some days it up near the 30,000 steps when I walk to work.

This morning fasting test had me at 6.4 which has come down slowly. but I'm flat out of energy for the 3rd day on the run and keep getting killer head aches. All I want to do is put my head down and have a sleep which isn't really an option at work.

So do people recommend this diet approach and is 50gms of carbs too much ?
should I feel so drained in the morning ?

On the Slimming World advice I say go for it. I lost 4 stones in the 1990s - but I wasn't diabetic then. I have Type2 diet and exercise and I buy Slimming World stuff from Iceland store. Also, I buy NuMe which is Weight Watchers from Morrisons. I always look at product details online before shopping, I have my first dietitian appointment on Thursday. All the best :-)

Hello bridg3. Welcome to the forum. May I ask if you have received from @daisy1 an Information Sheet that all newly
diagnosed people receive? :)

Personally I think 50 grams of carb per day is too much. As to Slimming world I can't say I know anything about it really. I follow http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf and have so far managed to keep my BG normal more or less.

Hello welcome ..
A few people use slimming world .. I use some WW products ..
If it motivates you .. Yes use it ..
@daisy1 will give you some other information .. Your welcome pack .. :)

Hi worried now. I was told 50grams per meal of crabs and I've pretty much tried to keep it just under. Not sure I could cope with just 50 a day

If you test before and one and two hours after a meal you'll see how many carbs you can cope with and of what kind. Bread, rice and mashed potatoes are the worst for me. What is your HbA1c?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't these slimming foods cut the fat & increase the sugars? When it should be the other way round for a diabetic. Increasing fat aides weight loss & increases energy lost from lower carb intake, aswell as better gloucose control.

ok im very new to the monitor and I've just been looking at the base number. I guess I need to go play with the meter some more. When I say slimming world I mean more of , protein , mostly veg and small carb to make up each meal, no fat free type sweets or yoghurts and no chocolates or crisps. and 2 pieces of fruit a day 1 between breakfast and lunch and one between lunch and dinner.

S your basically on a lower carb higher fat, lchf diet. Good fats are needed to make up for the lower carbs thus putting the energy back lost from lower carbs.

I guess I need to start asking for my Blood test results, when I got told I was diabetic before xmas I was just so shocked I didn't take it in, she mentioned some numbers and a scale one was 79 the other was over 140. I've another appointment next week another blood test I'll pay more attention. I'd just been so tired, I was going to the bathroom every 15 minutes and trying to quench a thirst I couldn't get rid of for a few months, I know one of the tests was high enough she said i'd been diabetic over 6 months based on the sugars in my blood.

I don't think 50 grams of carbs is a small amont but yes, do test. That is really the only way to learn what you can cope with. And don't be afraid of fat! It doesn't raise bg but fills you up. If you want to lose weight I'd say it's safer to eat fat than carbs.
