Type 2 struggling with levels and anxiety

Hello, I've been diagnosed since oct 2010, and after initially struggling with metformin, I was changed onto slow release metformin and gliclazide. After about a year, I was allowed to come off the gliclazide because they were at times making me have hypos and my sugars levels were good off them.

Recently I've been under a lot of stress at work and one day I felt particularly poorly and tested my sugars which were at 21, I saw the doctor who signed me off sick with anxiety and suggested I increase my metformin to three a day, or four a day. This increase had the inevitable side effects, swollen tummy and upset stomach, and my sugars were never below 13, and often above 17, even on fasting overnight, awaking they were often above 13.

My doctor has signed me off for another two weeks, with stress anxiety and reduced my metformin to two a day and introduced sitagliptin 100mg once a day, the problem is I seem to feel quite dizzy on these, but baring in mind I've only been on these since Saturday, but my sugars this morning was 13.9 and 11.4, after 12.30 o clock. He also put me on an anxiety tablet.

What's a normal reading, what should my levels be normally at? What happens next if my sugars don't come down ? Is this new medication a good one, has anyone taken it, does the side effects wear off after a few days, is it worth keeping on with it ?

Any advice wld be great
Thanks x

Hi
U
Your story is like mine. Ive been on that drug for 2 months now along with metformin s r i found it made my feell odd to start with. Its a clever drug as it works when needed not like gliz which makes the pancreas work harder n keep making insulin. I have since bn given glimepiride as levels still high im now waiting to go on victoza injections as bloods not coming below 9 overnight n 7.5 during day
Stick with it for awhile it takes a bit to build up in your body
Good luck

Hi. I've been on Sitagliptin for 2 years and never had a problem but we are all different. It's not know to have many problems. Have you thought about starting Gliclazide again if your BS doesn't come down. It is available in 40gm tablets so you could re-start with a small dose? BTW although upping the Metformin will help don't expect too much from the increased dose as Metformin only has a small effect on blood sugar. Are you overweight and if so having a low-carb diet? Diet is always the first choice to get sugars and weight down. A 'normal' blood sugar test via the meter is somewhere below 8.5mmol 2 hours after a meal and preferably nearer 6-7. An HBa1c Test should be below 7.5 and preferably nearer 6-7%. Morning tests can be a bit unreliable due to the dawn phenomenon so try 2 hours after a meal.

I was initially put on 80gm of gliclazide, then told to half it because it was making my sugars drop to 2-3, after halving it, I was better, but I also have under active thyroid, so I do struggling with my weigh, so I had a chat with my diabetic nurse, who said that my diet was good, and the gliclazide cld gain weight, so as my sugars were good I cld come off it. I am about a stone and a half over weight, and I've lost about 10lbs over the last three weeks....

All of your advice is really appreciated, because generally it's been really good, so it's really unsettling when it suddenly changes

Thanks
Charlotte
