hi everyone I'm in need of some advice I'm on 1500mg metformin 1 500mg in morning 2 500mg in evening yesterday after breakfast around 9.30 breakfast was around 7am i had a banana at 8.40 I started feeling hot shakey I don't self test under Drs instructions and was about 20 mins late going for break I had chicken breast and wholemeal roll with salad I started feeling better is this a hypo I have had a cold and work was really hot but I wasn't rushing around and gave no idea why I felt like that
Thanks I was given a meter when I got diagnosed but he will not give me strips and have applied for other meters but they won't issue them because I'm not I'm not entitled to to strips so I'm in a catch 22. What forum do I need to post on to find out which is a good meterTeddy bear 74 sounds like similar signs to a hypo but without testing you don't really know if i were you i would probably get yourself a BG meter we all know doctors say most but not all type 2s needent bother to test but i think all diabetics should otherwise how do someone know what's going on sadly if doctor won't give you test strips which he probably won't you will have to buy your own but if you contact a meter company they will send you a meter for free just ask on forum which is a good meter to use where strips are not to dear hope this helped?
I have been on this does since Aug last year and on a lower dose before that I was diagnosed in 2013. I just think it's strange why it's playing up all of a sudden . I was suffering with headaches for no reason all weekend now this I don't know if I should speak to diabetic nurse or drHi @teddybear74 ,
I'm not saying it cannot happen but Metformin is not known for causing hypo's. Its action is to reduce the tendency of a person's liver to release glucose. It also normally works over a long period rather than dropping blood glucose level suddenly - like insulin is capable of doing.
What is more common, is the difficulty that the body has adjusting to lower blood glucose levels. It is entirely possible to experience the symptoms of a hypo without being clinically hypo (eg below 4mmol/L). It can take anything from a few days to several weeks to adjust depending on the individual and how long your blood glucose has been high. This is generally termed a 'false hypo'.
The only way to be sure is to get a meter though.

When people ask that question here, we usually suggest the SD Codefree. The reason being that if you're self financing, the on going cost of test strips is the lowest. There is also a discount code for bulk purchases - I think @Bluetit1802 can give you this.
@Bluetit1802 , I've just registered an account on Homehealth and used the code for 5 packs of strips. Thank you for posting these. Are they a one use only code do you know?Try here for the Codefree meter

and here for the extra strips

Pharmacies don't sell them.
There are discount codes if you buy in bulk and don’t forget to check the box that you have diabetes so you can buy VAT free.
5 packs 264086
10 packs 975833
